Bought newest Avast Pro, system now slowing to a crawl

Hey folks…

So I had been using Avast Pro 4 for years, and just moved to Avast Pro 6.

It seems to be okay on my Windows 7 x64 systems, but running under Windows XP Pro (x32), it appears to be slowing my system to a crawl, especially when the various ‘shields’ are enabled.

Lots of drivers said they couldn’t load, system services couldn’t start, Diskkeeper defragmenter said it couldn’t connect to the defrag service, etc.

As soon as I turned the shields off, everything worked again. I turned them back on, things stopped working.

Is anyone having this problem? I have no idea how to debug it.

Take a look at this post from pk: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=81452.msg667905#msg667905

Hey there, thanks for the suggestions! - I took a look at those; they don’t match my particular problem (different defrag program, different other programs, system level drivers and services not working), etc.

The problem was specifically with Diskkeeper, and generally with many Windows libraries and services themselves… not sure if the above can help. I may try them, but they don’t seem to apply to my situation.

I will search to see if there is anything posted specifically about Diskkeeper, and will also reenable the shields and look for other system errors I was getting.

Please apply patch ap2011-17-07-002: http://public.avast.com/~kurtin/patches/#ap20111707002
Solved…??

I will give it a try this weekend and let you know - are these “official” patches from the Avast programming staff?

  • Tim

Yes. They will be incorporated in the next stable release too.

Yes, they are.

Avast! is certainly not going to let anyone else make a patch for their program and distribute it on their own forum.

See here, patch posted by pk (Petr Kurtin)>>http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=81452.msg667905#msg667905, one of Avast!s employees. You can distinguish who actually works for Avast! on the forum by the “Avast! Team” tag and the trademark amoeba by their username.

Thanks - I thought it was ok, but just wanted to check in.

I like the term ‘trademark amoeba’.

I have had the same slowing problem on my Netbook.

I think I will wait for the next official update.

Just a suggestion:

If Avast is creating patches between updates maybe there should be

  1. A “Patch” sticky thread on this forum
  2. A link to “Patch” updates on the Avast website. There may be one but I have not seen it.

Actually, that sounds like a pretty good idea!
