I just got rid of AVG 8 Anti Virus (free version) which I have been using since Mar2008 and replaced it with Avast! So far I quite like Avast and enjoy all the comments from other users. This forum is very good! There are so many areas that I need to learn about yet and may have more questions in the future.
query 1…I read that I must register after 60 days but in the forum somewhere I read that it is not necessary to register the free version. which is correct? what is the benefit of registering?
query 2…When I was installing Avast! the Free home version, there was an option near the end to (I think) edit scan schedule but before I knew it the rest of the install process had started. I vaguely remember something about every 4min and every 4 hours. All was successfully installed and a new version of definition updates found and installed.
Other than viewing the avast Simple User Interface box which shows last update and other info, I don’t know where to go to view or edit schedule of when Avast is updated, when the definitions are installed/updated and when the scan takes place. Or even if this is possible. If all this is done automatically, that is great. Nothing for me to be concerned about.
query 3…each time I click on the Simple User Interface icon, a box pops up and begins checking memory…do I need to go thru this each time? I have been cancelling this.
I don’t know where you read that but you need to register even for the free version, it doesn’t cost anything. What it does it give Alwil an idea of the number of active users and their distribution, this helps them plan the update server so that we get no huge problems accessing the update servers.
This was one of several reasons why I quit AVG over four and a half years ago for avast as I could hardly ever get connected to the update servers.
Complete the avast! 4 Home Registration form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key.
You will have to re-register every 14 months, that is how long a key lasts, again that keeps Alwil up to date of active users.
Updates are set to automatically check when you first connect to the internet and every 4 hours if you remain connected.
If there is a virus signature update available it will download and install automatically. These updates are incremental and are measured in KBs rather than MBs (so no drama) and usually take seconds rather than minutes.
Program updates are set slightly different because they are likely to be larger and if one is available it will Ask in the form of a notification, a program update is available do you want to download/install now. If you are busy just ignore and the pop-up will close, do a manual update when ready, right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select Updating, Program Update.
Program updates are done over a 7 day cycle so as to balance server load, so at some point in that cycle it will be your turn to be notified.
I was looking at some back issues and on the subject of brand new users,on 8th june 2004 someone called Fu Xuen was member number 5,000.He won a free upgrade to pro edition for 1 year. And now Avast has 50,512 members.Thats a lot of growth, just over tenfold.
Not according to your Profile (user id) u=10064 ;D
That is the problem with numbers/statistics they frequently don’t match, I think it was the same for the supposed 50,000th member their user id wasn’t 50,000.
Nor does the user id allocated at the time of joining, it isn’t a case of lies, damn lies and statistics ;D
It is just that as members close their membership or are banned/removed the total number of members will also drop in the same way if a topic is removed it will reduce the number of topics. If you contributed to that topic will also see their post count reduce accordingly as this figure is active an not historic/fixed and maintained in the same way as the user id allocated at the time you register.
So all I’m saying is the accuracy can’t be relied on, nothing more.
Yes, but you are preserving a moment which doesn’t record the full facts, e.g. the underlying user id the true count of user membership.
You could as easily captured an image the post count, but we both know that can be reduced through deletions by the mods so it to is an inaccurate record.
We can go around in circles all day long.
On the day I captured the info, bob10000 was the 10000’s subscriber at that moment.
Since we apparently never retain our sign up #, that’s the only thing I can be guided by.
