Brother's computer having some issues need some advice

Hi all,

I’m working with my brother on hopefully getting his Dell Inspiron laptop up and running better.

OS:
Windows 7 Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1

Symptoms:

  • IE 9 will not run properly, it will crash or freeze up and it doesn’t print any webpages
  • Windows will get stuck at the start-up loading screen forcing you to hard turn off

I’ve enclosed the appropriate log files from the OTL and aswMBR programs so I’m looking for some direction. I haven’t enclosed the Malewarebytes log because it came back clean. Let me know where I should go from here and if it’s an infection that needs to be addressed since he surfs the web a lot during the day. He’s also been hit multiple times with JavaScript Exploits but Avast has caught them and cleaned them up. This is why I’m wondering if he’s ran into a more serious problem. As far as IE 9 goes I just told him to not use it and use Firefox instead. Thanks again for any help on this matter.

Hi there I can see no apparent malware, what happened prior to this occuring ? Did he install any new programmes

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click Command Prompt and select run as administrator
In the black box that opens type the following command :

sfc /scannow

Press enter

This will check the veracity of Windows system files and repair them where necessary
On completion reboot and let me know if there is any difference

So far it seems to be working ok. I don’t know if he’s tried IE 9 yet to see if that’s working better. When I ran the program it said some of the files couldn’t be repaired that were corrupted. Is this common for something like this to happen since this is the first time I’ve ever ran this program before.

OK lets see if we can locate the unrepairable files

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
Type in the following command and press enter

findstr /c:“[SR]” %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

This will generate a notepad file
Could you zip this and then upload to a file sharing site such as Mediafire
Then post the sharing link and I will check it out

I just tried that but don’t see any sort of txt file. Where will it be located and what will the name be?

It should be on the root C drive

Heh well now I found it and it is only 40kb so I can attach it straight to the post. Wow I had a dumb moment and just searched for it and found it. Here it is.

OK the one it could not repair is of no import

So next would be a clean boot to see if we have a driver conflict… This may take an hour or so to complete though

Step 1:

Start the System Configuration Utility
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.

Step 2:

Configure selective startup options
In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. Verify that Load System Services and Use Original BOOT.INI are checked.
Click the Services tab.
Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
Click Disable All, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Step 3: Log on to Windows

If you are prompted, log on to Windows.

Now we get to the tedious part,:

If windows behaves itself then do the following

Restart MSConfig and select half of the disabled services and reboot

Is the problem still present ?

If Yes then deselect half of the services that you resumed and reboot

If no then select half of the remaining services and reboot

The intention here is to isolate the one service/driver that is causing the problem

I stopped all the other programs and it hasn’t impacted his use of the computer so I guess we’ll leave them off for now because he says all works much better and faster.

OK but you will need to reset any that are involved with Avast

Yeah I know and actually all those that are involved with Avast I never took off because I knew what they were for so why bother. I know Avast can sometimes cause problems but I’ve never had it in all my time using it…several years now. I just love being the “resident expert” on computers in my family, even when I tell them to come to the forum and ask but nobody does. They just expect me to do it for them or they just give up and fry the computer then replace it.

How is the computer behaving now… Ok to remove my tools

I’ve removed the tools and the computer appears to behaving itself for now. Keeping fingers crossed and praying it stays that way.
