Browser cleanup found "Web Compat" in Firefox 49.0

Hello everyone

Today, Avast told me that it found a addon in Firefox named “Web Compat”.
I found it strange, so before deleting it, I searched in the internet for it, and I couldn’t find anything about it.

Even in the logs, I couldn’t find the info about it (only about the other addons).

I uploaded a screenshot in the attchments.

Can anyone tell me if this is a nasty addon or something?

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1268197

So, it’s just a bug right?
I shouldn’t be worried about it right?

ive got this too so its not an isolated thing. it seems to be an offical mozzilla plugin so im guessing its a false positive

The rating in the BCU is based on (but not limited to) :

  • How many times a add-on is installed/removed by users of avast
  • The rating in the add-on store

If you believe the rating is wrong, you can ask avast to review the add-on.

Interesting, so it looks like a false positive.

Maybe almost nobody is getting this error, and I didn’t find it in the store.
Since the link you posted earlier it’s told as a bug, I Will Tell to Avast to recheck it.

ok so ever since i updated firefox on my desktop and started getting web compat thing my yahoo homepage has started looking different and i wonder if its connected. i updated firefox on my windows tablet no web compat issue and the yahoo page is normal.
(i fixed my yahoo homepage issue by clearing the cookies) (it really freaked me out because every other device showed yahoo fine but my desktop didnt)
the compat addon is still there in firefox but avast isnt showing it as bad but still is on my desktop

update: my tablet didnt fully update firefox to the latest version and avast is now detecting the web compat addon, my laptop has firefox up to date but avast doesnt seem to scan anything other than internet explorer on that (or atleast wont show results from other browsers).

Well, I hope that everything gets fixed about it. I don’t know if it’s a Good Idea to delete the addon, since it looks like a false positive.

Leave it there I would say.
avast just says bad reputation, not bad add-on

Thank you Eddy for sending me to this message link. This is exactly th e same issue I had, however, I don’t use the add-on… so
I am going to just close the warning pop-up when it comes up again.

I’m getting a warning like this as well

it’s safe to ignore right?

EDIT: After I hit X on the Avast warning, and clicked “scan for browser addons, it didn’t show up”

I’m guessing I’m fine right?

I’m still getting the warning here.
But in my opinion, it looks like a false positive. I didn’t uninstalled it yet, I will wait for Avast to fix it (if possible).

I got the warning a few hours after updating FF,removed and all seams ok.

Edited to add, today I did a fresh install of FF 49.0 and manually scanned and the warning has reappeared, will ignore untill avast looks into it,as mentioned looks like a FP.

I have the same

Like Eddy said : Leave it there, and let the Avast boys figure it out.

Greetz, Red.

I updated Firefox yesterday and got this warning as well when surning on my PC just now.

Hello Nori-chan,
I received your email. After checked this addon I changed the rating to 3 stars, this means “neutral rating”. After a while could be the rating becomes higher state.

Appear to be an unnecessary alert. Seems like an “addon” that shouldn’t have a bad rating. Appears embedded Firefox functionality. “Web Compat” is not an installed addon on my system.
Seems, would be useful to be able to report a false positive in the alert.

Agree would be good to report as false positive. I had same alerat, although don’t use Web Compat addon so puzzled. Hit delete anyhow, but ned not have done according to previous posts from Eddie etc.
Ed

dunkyboy,
Well it is a “add-on”, just normally not visible to users.

rocksteady,
it is not a false alert.
As this is only happening with the newly released FireFox, it is a very new add-on that not much avast users have installed (yet).
That and the fact that it is not available in a “store” gives it a low rating.

Looks like this has been resolved already with an update from Avast.

no warning or ignored message now.
