browser helper object

Hello,
I just installed a Zone alarm update and Spybot Search & Destroy detected a registry entry that I’m having trouble deciding for myself through google searches if this is a well advised change or not. I’ve noticed now in the browser there is a Zone alarm spy blocker menu with several options for security services, turning off spyblocker ect. I’m left to assume this feature is a good thing but I really don’t know much about it and it’s relevance to the reg entry.I have attached a screen shot which shows the detection as a browser helper object and seem to remember sometimes these can be bad as well as good. Your advice is greatly appreciated, thank you. p.s. decided against attaching screen shot probably too big.

I suppose you’re using the trial or professional version of ZA…

Please, save the screenshot with a lower quality…
See how to post a screenshot: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).

I am using the version of ZA. I wished I tried a lower quality for the screen shot before to save time but here it is. Thanks for your help and advice.

It doesn’t look like the quality is very good. Some of the important stuff like the entry is very hard read I’ll look into the other options you gave for posting a screen shot.

Please, Google the info:

Is AskToolBar that you allowed ZA to install. If you don’t want this toolbar, remove it from Control Panel > Add/Remove programs.

Also check: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=19387.msg267557#msg267557

ZA indicated nothing about an ask toolbar and I didn’t agree to have it installed Consumer beware huh? This was one of the pages found when I googled the reg entry. http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic82982.html the last post on this tread says delete that entry.

Remove the following using hijackthis and in safe mode.

It looks like the best choice is to deny the change in the registry via spybot right? I also found it interesting how many results from the google search returned pages about virus issues. Thanks again for your help ;D
ps i thought i would include hjt log. It doesn’t show anything that I can see but I haven’t restarted my puter since ZA update.

If you don’t want Ask Toolbar, yes.

Okay, thanks again for you help

I don’t thing you should block it this (see below) would appear to be what S&D was having a whine about a new BHO for ZA in IE (unless of course you don’t want the ZA SpyBlock, in which case you should remove it from ZA).

O2 - BHO: ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker BHO - {F0D4B231-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\ZoneAlarmSB\bar\1.bin\SPYBLOCK.DLL

Thank you that information. It would seem if it’s not one thing it another. Upon denying those registry changes and restarting windows avast game the warning: “Avast! Incompatible software detected” What does this mean and what do I do?

I hope you’re able to read the screen shot on mine i clicked once in the fax viewer and was able to read it.

AS you do not have the pro version click NO

Pro version? I don’t know if you mean ZA or Avast but I’m unclear what selecting no means. Does this mean less security? What does the “webshield transparent proxy mode” do? http://www.wilderssecurity.com/archive/index.php/t-94085.html

The formentioned url is somewhat out of date but similar in nature since it shows humorous comments about ZA.

Sorry I meant the pro version of ZA what clicking no does is allow webshield to work at its full effectiveness

I think the problem may be that you have the ZA free version with a lot of additional trial ware bells and whistles, it is more of a suite that a stand alone firewall and that does I believe mean that it is running the ZA Pro version of the firewall and that is what avast is detecting.

Does your version of ZA have a Privacy function ?

Wher exactly did you download ZA ?

That clears it for me, thank you. I appreciate all your help here. Hopefully I won’t have anymore issues related to ZA.

Thank you for that information. Hopefully I won’t have anymore issues with ZA. I appreciate everyone’s help here ;D
