Browser takeover

DELL Windows Vista

Computer was swarming with spy/malware and some sort of kernal infection.

I was trying to just reinstall to factory settings but it wont let me?!?

I F8 the computer, select Repair Computer, it then gives me a “other user” prompt? When I try to put in the username (there is no password) it says it cant connect to the domain? I disabled the “hidden user” but cant figure out what is going on.

Logs attached

Which browser is this on ? Could you run a fresh FRST scan please

Its a webbar by: getwebbar.com

using mozilla but this bar lets you pick all available browsers and has quick links to social media etc…tried to delete but got an error.

Also there are a handful of icons in the uninstall program spot in the control panel that wont go away…

see attached

OK found it, this is a new one to remember

Does windows offer to remove those entries ? If not then I would suggest using Revo Uninstaller, that will clear them

Question…what is the “network magic folders” icon on the desk top. I can only open or explore it? Is that a vista thing?

log attached

Network magic is part of Cisco and is legitimate (assuming that the owner knows about it  ) http://store.linksys.com/Cisco-Software_stcVVcatId553232VVviewcat.htm

How is the computer now ?

all seems ok. I am trying to cleanup some of those icons with revo…

I will let it go for a day and report back any issues.

Cleanup time??

Yep why not, run this when you are happy

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start then Run.
On Windows7 or Vista you may use Start Search field if Run is not available.
In the box copy/paste the following command:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Note that there is a space between " ComboFix " and " /Uninstall " .

Then click OK (or press Enter ).
Wait for the uninstall process to complete.

Download and run Delfix

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

Thank you as always for your help. If I have any further issues, Ill let you know. ;D

My pleasure
