browser vulnerability

I see a popup from avast saying IE on XP will no longer be safe and to click here to fix it now.

Does anyone know what happens when you click it? Will it make changes without giving you the option to decline?

You will be directed to the Google Chrome download page.
The obvious reason is to start using Chrome. Avast certainly appears to be supporting that Browser.
You can ignore and keep using IE8, HOWEVER, you will not be as safe as another up to date Browser.

Edit: I personally do not use IE 8 on my xp anymore, for obvious security reasons I would recommend you don’t use IE 8.

I was going to post about the same thing, glad I found it had already been answered!!!

It doesn’t seem to matter what my default browser is. The avast status screen keeps complaining and insisting I fix it. Since you can’t really “uninstall” IE, this is really just annoying!

Latest version of IE is IE11 upgrade to that and Avast Software Updater will no longer notify you of any updates for IE

::slight_smile: ::slight_smile: And just how do they achieve this trick when running XP ?

All this is just Microsoft’s way of making us get all new hardware/software. I turned off MS updates a while back because every time I applied updates, XP took 15 seconds longer to start. They just want to make XP seem so hard to live with so you’re forced to buy W7, or worse yet, W8! I have tons of development software and other utilities on this box. A downgrade to W7 would cost me about another $1,200 for W7, and W8 is just a poor excuse for an iPhone toy. I’ll be keeping XP Pro as long as possible. I’m still running avast 7 and just tried 2014 on a VPC to check it out for a neighbor who’s running AVG 2013, because AVG 2014 hosed him. I was going to suggest avast until I saw this message that would just confuse him into creating more problems.

I know I’ll be getting lots of replies from W7 and W8 lovers, so that’s all I’ll be saying on this matter. I’m just a reactionary with not enough money or time to reprogram all my products.

The inconvenience of MS updates don’t just happen on XP, the same things happens on Windows Vista, 7,8, machines every month on patch tuesday. Its a technical problem not a policy problem, if there is a kernal patch then of course it can be only applied after a restart or before a cold boot.

Not talking about the first boot after the update. Every boot after each update was adding 15 to 30 seconds to boot (Usable machine) time. After all those updates added up to 4.5 extra minutes, I killed what I could and stopped updating.

Likewise here. I don’t use IE 11. I use Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox

LOL Avast Software Updater can detect it LOL

You can select Ignore Updates directly under the notice.
