I have just spent an afternoon trying to figure outwhy some broesers would not open homepage or anything else, I allowed them in exclusions on my Windows Firewall and aast but still wouldn’t open but havingopened Avast interface I founds shields control and on shutting that down for ten mins I couls open Homepage and open this forum. But it still does not allow me to post this. Is there some thing I am not doing right?
I have no problem on good old XP only on this hirrible Vista.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ron.
Other security related programs installed…??
Good question Asyn PC Tools Threatfire,
but this is also included on my XP desktop with no problems.
Ron.
Just to be sure I suspended Threatfire but it made no difference, but worth a Try.
Funny thing is it does not effect Flash Peaks Slimbrowser. Wierd
Ron.
Threatfire shouldn’t be a problem.
So which browser(s) are we talking about…?
asyn
Google-IE-FF-Opera, the only one that works on my Laptop using Vista OS is SlimBrowser.
My desktop using Avast running XP OS can open all browsers.
I have checked the settings of Avast on XP and as far as I can see they are the same as
Avast on Vista OS.
I must admit I am at a loss.
Any help Asyn would be appreciated. thanks.
Ron.
- Try this: In Settings - Updates - Proxy use Direct Connection (No Proxy)
or if you need to use a proxy, enter it there… - Is there any 3rd party firewall involved…?
- Which version of avast are you using (free/pro/is)…?
asyn
Hi Asyn
Proxy settings are on auto detect
No third party Firewall(unless there’s a hidden one in Avast)
I am Using Windows Vista Firewall.
Avast Version 101119-1
Free.
Ron.
- Change this to Direct Connection (No Proxy)
- No hidden FW in avast free…!!

Done that, still only opens SlimBrowser.
It really is strange.
Thanks for the effort.
Ron.
Download free Mbam. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Update it.
Run a scan and post the log here.
asyn
okay BEDO please check maybe your browser is work offline?
Good thought Bong2x
but, no it’s on line, anyway I don’t think SlimBrowser or any other Browser would work if IE was off line.
Thanks for the post.
Ron.
Not strange, I suspect slim browser isn’t a supported browser and as such won’t be using the web shield proxy. You can check the Web Shield in the Real-Time Shields section of the avastUI and I think you will find it isn’t being scanned ?
Changing the update proxy settings as mentioned will have zero effect (as you found) as it relates only to when checking for updates (which doesn’t use a browser).
Something is blocking/conflicting the web shield proxy rather than the web shield blocking your browsers (it doesn’t have that function).
Is this an update from XP to Vista on this system or is it a different system ?
If a different system - Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
The Vista firewall doesn’t have outbound protection enabled by default, so shouldn’t be blocking the web shield, did you enable outbound protection in the Vista firewall ?
If you did enable outbound protection, what did you add to the exclusions (it should have been avastSvc.exe) ?
I have been out with friends this evening so sorry I haven’ replied sooner.
Firstly Previous AVs were AVG-Panda Cloud both cleared by Revo. Had a good look myself in Docs & Settings and Prog Files no sign of any bits of either.
No other OS has been installed on this machine it was installed when purchased new.
I cannot find any reference to out bound on Windows Firewall only allowing programs through the Firewall, and
Avast is allowed. But the exception is taken from prog files and appears as (avast! Free Antivius)
Ron.
- Personally I don’t believe Revo should be used when it comes to security applications, rather the specific removal tool from the company.
- Ensure that all remnants of AVG are gone - AVG8.x (or higher) Remover, download tool from here, http://www.avg.com/download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.
Also see http://www.askvg.com/ultimate-collection-of-uninstallers-removal-tools-for-all-popular-anti-virus-software/ for others not listed above.
and http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/
- As I said unless you enabled outbound protection in the Vista firewall there is no protection and consequently no blocking or exclusions of processes.
- also see Cause for apparent Web Shield blocking internet connection, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57443.0.
- Did you check if slim browser’s browsing is actually scanned ?
Thanks DavidR I will do all that tomorrow.
I’ll post on completion of your suggestions.
Ron.
You’re welcome.
Goodmorning DavidR
Used both the uninstallers AVG and Panda Unfortunately made no difference.
I disabled the Web Shield and all browsers work.
Sorry to be a pest, I shan’t be upset if you want to give up on me. ;D
Ron.
P.S Using Opera to post this.
So, Opera does work, right…??
Did you run the Mbam scan yet…?
