BSOD using skype / msn messenger - problem of proxy? (solved!)

i wrote a few weeks ago a post about msn messenger and mozilla and a problem of bsod under win 98se. I still don’t have solved the problem… and thrown my webcam away…

A friend of mine wich has the same config has experienced the same problem with his skype connection : after using skype, IE and mozilla will crash and make a bsod causing reboot of the computer.

I REALLY wonder if there’s not a problem with avast! (websield?) and the obligation of using a proxy under win98. Indeed , the problem occurs only when doing an audio or video communication with skype or msn messenger… Those applications open ports…don’t they ? is there a possible conflict with proxy 120.0.0.1 and port 12080?? ???

What do you avast people think about it ?

Hi cvsa !

I never used skype, so I can’t possibly tell anything useful, but I’m using MSN messenger. My system runs on Windows XP Professional SP2, and version of MSN messenger is 7.0 final. So, it doesn’t tell much about your problem, but why I write this ? Just because I maintenance my father’s PC. I am in Canada, and he is in Croatia. I use pcAnywhere to connect remotely to his system, but we also use MSN messenger because I want to be non-stop in contact with him. Yes, there is messaging feature in pcAnywhere, but it’s not so reliable like MSN messenger. My father is still on Dial-up, so his internet connection is not that stable. In 99% pcAnywhere works perfect, but sometimes, it just kicks us out. Therefore it’s always good to have some backup messaging program as MSN messenger, so I can tell him what to do, while I don’t “see” him on pcAnywhere… we intensively use both, webcam and microphones (video and audio). Anyway, to make long story, short… naturally, he also uses MSN messenger, but he is on Windows 98 Second Edition. He also has avast! installed for a very long time by now, and he never ever had any single problems with his MSN, Windows or avast!

It must be something else on your and your friend’s system… maybe some other application that causes all those problems… or maybe, some combination of few applications installed on the same system.

I trully hope you’ll find what’s causing those BSODs

Have a great day cvsa !

Is there any possibility that you wrote it wrong?
120.0.0.1 and port 12080
Should be: 127.0.0.1 and port 12080

sorry technical, i wrote it wrong :-[
so… maybe a problem with ZA… i’m a bit lost…

No problems using Skype.
It is in the instant messaging part of good Avast, so you could unable that protection if really suspecting it, but I don’t.

Skype though is a wierd and nice program.
Easily generates 6 kB or even 9 kB traffic using my connection and I guess it is to serve my neighboring Skype users, for their connection.
That is when I am not using it, only running.

Only to be found out with my trusted Sygate FW and also the blinking cable modem lights

Skype has also the setting, check box, to allow alternatively ports 80 and 443 for the incoming connections. Maybe you should uncheck it.

I suggest disable or even uninstall ZA to see if the problem is there…

my friend’s skype problem is solved (installing an older version more compatible with win98se ???).

My problem with msn still remains…

    Hurray !!!

the problem is solved… since i Installed the lat (april) microsoft’s security updates !!!

i don’t know why, but it works… ;D
