ok here we go - my laptop is running fine but if I just close the laptop by that I mean close the ‘lid’ without doing anything else I get a BSOD . Any ideas anyone ???

before I forget avast 4.8 PRO is the best

paul

This is probably being caused by an improper shutdown of the laptop.

helo charlyO

when you say 'improper shutdown ’ what do you mean exactly

paul

disable avast self-defense and checking rootkits on start up from trouble shooting section, did that work?

hi superhacker

tried that but nothing , any other ideas , oh yes since I installed a new sound driver this problem has been occuring

Hi pmal67,

What is your OS? The latest Windows update caused BSODs for some in connection with some driver types (XP SP3 machines experienced it) see: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/73cea559-ebbd-4274-96bc-e292b69f2fd1
You are one of the unfortunates if you get this error: “PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". User are best advised to update system drivers before patching, boot from Windows XP recovery disk is a solution, but for those without or on a netbook the problem could be a pain in the proverbial parts.

The day Microsoft makes something that doesn’t suck is the day they invent a computer vacuum cleaner ;D , but in this case it isn’t MS but third party software to blame…

You could use device doctor to look for the correct drivers, it is free: http://www.devicedoctor.com/

polonus

Hi Polonus…

By any chance is there a list of specific drivers that are causing this?

God bless

Hi ardvark,

Has to do with ACPI fixed button error, according to the sys data file that went attached with the critical system error that for some caused the BSOD, I could easily recover with an additional boot,

polonus

Hi Polonus…

Ok, thank you, I’m glad you were able to fix yours easily.

God bless

yeah, could only be an ACPI issue…generally solved as said with a reboot.

Hi Logos,

I always analyze the temp files that are being sent with error reports to MS to later analyze the cool facts.
Also a glance at logs explorer reports also helps, I advice all security aware to do the same. Know what you have running under the hood of the machine can help you understand. This does not happen overnight but gradually you “absorb” the information to create some better insight,

polonus

Hi Polonus,

yeah, I do generally have a look at what’s being reported to MS after an application or a system crash; but I don’t bother going through the temp files: there’s all the necessary info in the Windows Error Reporting dialog + even viewer and if more is needed, there’s generally a link to an MS KB article… unfortunately leading very often to “unknown problem” pages…Vista/Seven reliability monitor is also quite handy.

polunus good morning

I’m using sp3 pro avast 4.8 pro and mbam pro this bsod arrives unannounced I have run driverchecker and when I do update the drivers as I recently formatted the laptop the same problem occurs ???

paul

Hi pmal67,

This is the proposed solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979682
As that particular patch created the problems for a large quantity of XP SP3 users,
if you are aware that no-one has your log-on data you are safe with the fix until MS comes up with a patched patch,
I sincerely hope this will help,
