Buffer overrun after converting C: from FAT to NTFS

I’m getting some problems with avast after converting C: from FAT to NTFS.

ashoutxt.dll can’t start when opening Outlook

Avast icon is not displayed on the taskbar

Also, when trying to remove avast getting a Buffer overrun error.

Thanks

This is due to an antipiracy feature of avast (like if you were ‘copied’ or ‘cloned’ the disk).
Can you uninstall avast, boot, install and boot again?

anti piracy on something that is free? With most software you have to register to keep it updated and to register you need a product key which is unique to every copy. From what I can tell this is usualy good enough without adding stuff to the software itself (when it comes to AV programs I mean).

I agree… Home version is very very good for me. But people pirate the Pro version and this antipiracy feature is needed.
Well, at least avast team say so… I’m an user like you 8)
Welcome to forums

Oh, by the way, did you try reinstalling it?

Can’t uninstall getting buffer overrun when I try

Now looking at reinstalling windows :frowning:

First try the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here

Can you boot in Safe Mode and trying to uninstall from there?

Sorted

First I used msconfig to stop avast from starting then manually deleted all but one file in the avast programs folder as it was still locked.

Then reinstalled avast

Just for reference, I did merge two partitions C and E then converted it to NTFS and thats when the problem started.

Generally, this won’t be a problem.

This will always be a problem…

Anyway, glad you’ve solved it 8)

So do you mean better not to convert C: to ntfs ?

Not that you shouldn’t convert, just that you will need to reinstall avast as part of the registration key/anti-piracy is based on the HDD volume information that would change when you convert to ntfs.

Aside from that there are advantages and disadvantages to converting to ntfs, both my HDDs are still formatted as fat32 as I didn’t feel the advantages out weighed the disadvantages for my particular usage.

No. David caught my point of view.
Sorry, I should be more clear.
You can convert to NTFS and this is a good thing (in my opinion). You just need to uninstall avast first, boot, convert to NFTS, install avast and boot again 8)
If you did not do this, at least, you’ll need to uninstall and install avast again.
