Follow-up:
I handled the situation by pointing my client directly to the servers and downloading all mails w/o benefit of Avast. Re-set back to port 127.0.0.1 and Avast is no longer packing up. Must have been some ugly e-mail. My junk mail filter sorted everything spamlike into a separate folder, none of the ones with today’s date have attachments. There are over 2,000 spams in that folder right now, and I could bundle a subset of them and send them to anyone who wants to examine them. For good deals on Viakra and other excellent items.
