I am so close to dumping Avast after this change. I am so tired of having to turn off Silent mode in order to scan a file and then have to enable it again. This is the dumbest change I have ever heard. This is like telling your car you dont want warning lights, but if you are about to run out of gas, DONT TELL ME! Are you kidding me.
I love when people comment when they read one posting and not the full posting. This change has broken the program that has worked fine forever. Silent does not mean silent when you issue a command and nothing happens.
What is so hard to see that if I asked to scan a file manually that I am given a result. Silent or NOT. It always worked before this release. It looks like someone broke this feature and has not fixed it. Do you have any clue how annoying it is to have to turn off silent mode and then turn it back on after every manual scan. I don’t want to be told about every issue I can possibly fix unless I am getting a virus. Then I want to be told.
Just a note, silent mode stops all notifications so it will stop malware notifications (e.g threats blocked by Web/File/Behavioir Shield). Threats will be blocked but you won’t be alerted.
This is without a doubt one of the dumbest decisions I’ve ever seen, when someone directly requests a manual scan it should actually display the result, its not rocket science. And that’s exactly the way it used to work too before this insanity took over.
Since when does software get worse and less convenient with time? With Avast I guess. The only real reason it seems to have changed is that some idiot corporate bean counter sees it as a way to force people to look at ads. Well guess what, people are not that stupid and if you’re trying to drive people away from Avast, towards more sane antivirus software then you’re doing a wonderful job, I’m already looking at other options.
Wow, no fecal material Sherlock? But it used to be even simpler, Previously you could do an explorer scan and see the result irrespective of whether silent mode was on or off. It was easy, it was unobtrusive, it worked and worked well no matter what your settings. This ridiculously stupid change was made solely as a cynical ploy to force people to view ads. And frankly it makes me want to get rid of Avast in favor of something better.
Someone whom has a communication link with developers and no doubt where he got the response.
You, as you have said are using the silent mode to avoid avast popop promotions/ads and probably why this action was removed. The consequence of that is no interaction whatsoever whilst in ‘silent’ mode.
Bob’s “explanations” are incorrect. Used to be that a right-click scan of a single file would show results even if I was in Silent Mode. The recent loss of the results is simply - and obviously - a BUG.
(Now, when I need to scan a single file or folder, I first double-click on the Avast icon in the lower right “tray” so it appears, and then right-click scan the file or folder. This is a waste of time.)
Bob - please ask the Avast dev team to set this back the way it was.
Not wishing to needlessly revive an old topic, I have Avast Free and my issue with Silent Mode is that it just doesn’t work. The point for me is not be interrupted whilst playing games and whereas Silent Mode worked just fine for years, in recent months (since this “update”, who knows) it doesn’t stay silent. I clearly have Silent Mode enabled and yet there I am, in the middle of an epic battle, just me and a million orcs, and that some middle class Englishwoman pipes up that a PUP has been detected (a false positive, to boot). Surely the point of Silent Mode is NOT TO BE DISTURBED whilst playing games?
The PC is currently running an automated backup and literally 2 minutes ago it piped up a warning about a PUP. This most often seems to happen during these automated backups, by the way.
Now, the thing is, it states “No Avast messages/pop-ups/alerts will be displayed”. Technically, an audible alert doesn’t fall into this category so, technically, it’s working as intended, but it cannot be said to be functioning in the spirit of “Silent” mode if it pipes up about a PUP whilst I’m being wiped by the last boss. Incidentally, I must get dozens of emails a day infected with all sorts of crap and it seems that in this case Silent Mode does what it says on the tin. It only seems to start talking to me when I’m running a backup (which is, unfortunately, daily).
I have uninstalled (with avastclear.exe) and reinstalled Avast multiple times but the problem persists, this on a Win 7 pro x64 desktop. I also have a Win 7 pro x64 laptop on which this does not seem to be an issue but, thinking about it, whilst the laptop is always on, the sound is always off and it’s the audible alerts that kill it for me, I repeat, I don’t get any on-screen alerts.
I’ve been a fan of Avast for decades but this is kinda bugging me.
Avast deliberately impaired right-click scanning of a single file in order to force viewers to see or hear ads.
I have been a big fan of avast but will be happy when we all move to Win 10, where Windows Defender does a very nice job with a much smaller footprint and much less interference in our lives.
So you don’t have a problem except the one you created when you decided to use silent mode in order to not see an occasional ad.
Solve your problem by disabling Silent mode, do your scan and then re-start silent mode.
