I can’t see any reference to the behaviour you describe in any of the write-ups for BugBear. Where did you see this information?
Your right to say that this is an old virus- the Sophos write-up is from 2002- and avast! should detect it, unless it is a new variant that has emerged.
Could you post a HijackThis! log for us to look at please?
