No need to burn it to a CD.
You can download old versions here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

Just to be clear, you can download and burn whatever whenever wherever. But, for Avast Free (or paid editions too), you don’t really need to (except, maybe, your license when you use the paid editions).
Do your job/tasks, and when you are finished, download the latest version available and install it.
About Avast automatically updating itself, what you have been seeing is the engine and antivirus database being updated. The program is updated once in a while, and it should show you a tray notification about it, so to ask you if you want to update to the latest program version. At least, this is the default setting.
Either you (dis)missed those tray notifications, or for some reason the tray notifications were delayed (not displayed at all), which is still a possibility already seen during this year.
HTH to clarify.

OK …Just tried to download latest version to CD and would not allow that so I downloaded to Desktop and there was no option to burn that to CD and I was going to run the download on my PC for the update to latest version and it said error and to download again . Have not tried again because really I would like to have on CD to install after my Clean Install .Any suggestions ? Thanks

Why not use a pen drive instead…??
It’s much easier.

I thought I Right Clicked on an Antivirus File on my Desktop at one time and got the option to " Burn To CD " but do not remember how I got the option actually , has been a while . Of course I do have a CD / DVD Burner installed . Thanks everyone .
