I had 16 or 17 DIFFERENT “prompts” for DIFFERENT Avast “downloads” when I logged into my computer this morning while not dialed-in. (SEE ATTACHMENT IS AN EXAMPLE “DOWNLOAD333.AVAST.COM” & “DOWNLOAD351.AVAST.COM” are just TWO of the MANY download requests)
Each of the 16 or 17 prompts will be for me to “connect” for “Avast.###download.com” where the “###” will be a different 3 digit number each time.
THIS MANY DIFFERENT DOWNLOAD REQUESTS IS SOMETHING NEW (never had these prompts for downloads numbered like this before) AND IT OCCURRED TODAY AND FOUR DAYS AGO ON 4/18/22.
What has changed?
What are these “downloads”?
They tie up my computer requesting ONE AFTER ANOTHER as I “cancel” each one before I can dial in otherwise if I don’t “cancel” them the computer bogs down.
Is there a Avast SETTING for DAIL-UP so that these “DOWNLOADS” will only be requested WHEN CONNECTED (dialed-in)?
OR
If advisable and the answer to the question above is “NO” then can these “download” requests be turned off or be made “manual”?
I’m afraid I’m not aware of any changes… the names of the servers indicate the usual virus definition updates.
Can you upload the \Setup\Setup.log file (e.g. to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming)?
I am not saying it reveals anything, but maybe…
I’m not familiar with how I would “upload” the file and I’m not sure where I’d find the “Setup.log” file. In C:\Program Files\AVAST software\Avast I can find the text document file name “setup” and configuration setting file name “setup”. I’m also not aware of how to use the ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming to accomplish your request. You’ve mentioned “the names of the servers indicate the usual virus definition updates”.
What I will get after logging into my computer (occurred twice now on 4/18 and today 4/22) are separate individual prompts (see two attached examples out of 16 or 17) one after the other as I click on “cancel” for each prompt to make a dial-up connection. After “cancelling” the prompt request to make a dial-up connection to download the Avast file then another prompt will appear about 5 seconds later and then another 5 seconds later and so on until around 16 or 17 prompts have popped up that I had cancelled to it will take about 1½ minutes to get through these prompts to connect for the Avast downloads. The Avast download request is in the format: “Avast.###download.com” where the “###” will be a different 3 digit number each time. Are you saying that Avast is RENAMING each download for a “virus definition update” to a different number because I am “cancelling” each prompt to connect for the download?
There is no renaming - it’s simply a few hundreds of avast! updating servers and avast! is choosing a random one for every connection.
Also, I’m not sure whether a download is actually attempted - the dial-up request is brought up during a connection attempt.
Btw, I assume you have the option “I only connect to the internet using a diap up modem” checked in Settings / Updates?
Yes I do have that setting for “dial-up” checked saying “I only connect to the internet using a dialup modem”. (it would be nice if when this is “checked” as I have that these prompts to connect would not show up)
These prompts are displayed when I’m not connected but just logging into my computer. They are “requests” to connect which is referred to as a “download” by Avast in the “prompt description”.
The “prompts”’ to “connect” will display one after the other if I “cancel” the prompt with about 5 second delays between each prompt.
So then I presume your saying that Avast is trying to “connect” and since the dial-up is NOT “connected” then the DIALER PROGRAM prompts my computer to connect.
In that case, I’m just wondering why so many attempts (prompts) one after the other?
I’ve never had this happen before where Avast needs to “connect” for “Avast.###download.com” so many times, in fact I’ve never seen a reference to a “download” before but instead the prompts in the past for Avast would mention that “information” was requested like in the example I’ve attached.
I’ve also attached the prompt for the “download” request as well to show the difference which is what I’m now getting 16+ times one after the other NOW.
The first attachment is what I’m getting NOW PRESENTLY that has the message a “connect” is requested for a “download” (Avast.###download.com).
The second attachment is what I USED to get in the PAST saying that “information” is requested from Avast and was NOT a “download” message for Avast and there would typically NEVER be more than TWO prompts (that I would have to “cancel”) instead of the 16-17 different prompts I’m getting NOW that I have to “cancel” since I am not connected and do not want to connect necessarily.
