I’m not that computer savvy. All i want to know is whether Avast (Home Version) can secure my computer from 90% (if not 100%) of the Spywares that are in cyberspace…
in cyberspace? oh yes.
yes it can ensure a high security for you but take it as a rule nothing provide or will provide 100% protection
No offense, but if it didn’t protect, none of us would use it.
this virus “Trojan Horse Generic_c.VCZ” got by my avast.
I have never had this happen before and have had avast since 2006.
what happen?
There are thousands of new variants of malware created (many of which are released by criminal gangs) daily.
No application can detect them all, every time.
That said, Avast can detect most of them, and is updated as frequently as any AV as new threats emerge. I haven’t been infected with anything as a result of Avast missing it for about three years.
I believe it is as good as any of the really good AV’s at detecting and blocking threats. (Or as scythe 944 sez, I wouldn’t be using it.)
Multiple layers of protection are a very good idea. That starts with common sense. Don’t download stuff unless it is believed to be safe, based on independent user reports. Especially free offers that look too good to be true etc etc (there is a whole education about user web safety to undergo, there. It takes a while to learn.) Second would be making sure the appropriate applications designed to protect are on. Which commonly means a firewall and an AV.
Third would be regularly backing up important files/pics/documents to external media, or use of an imaging program, so as to not loose important stuff should disaster strike.
Fourth would be the physical security of the computer. No point having an AV if the hacker can break into your house and steal the 'pooter.
Fifth…it goes on and on.
Read a few web tutorials.
It’s a never ending research (but doesn’t have to be. A few basic rules/procedures will keep the average user safe for a long time to come.)
I’ve been really happy with Avast! since I started using it. I used to use the paid for version of Norton 360, but was recommended Avast! by on of my NetSec professors. The first time I used Avast! it found infected files in my PC. I rescanned them, (the files) with Norton 360 and got nothing, not a single hit for any of the infected files. So I stick with Avast! as my primary protection. But, it’s always a good idea to have layered security as no one program can catch everything.
I also have malwarbytes for stand alone scans once in awhile.
Good luck,
Philo
