Can Avast Detect "Potentially Unwanted Programs" (aka PUPS)?

Hello all,

I just tested a clean install of Avast 2014 at the EICAR Test Website and Avast outperformed all other free AV’s but it failed to detect PUPs (test # 3) whereas all other tests passed:

For the record, I did a minimum install. So, am I doing something wrong here or do I need an additional option ticked somewhere? Thanks for your replies.

UPDATE:

OK, I found the PUP settings in the Active Protection/Sensitivity area of the File, Mail, and Web Shields. Each shield has its own unique PUP setting so I ticked all three and now I can safely say that Avast is the only free AV (I have tested) that passes all 5 EICAR tests (and I have tested a ton of them). Cheers!

Glad you like the protection!
Just like you I am an avast user and have found those tests to be reliable.
When avast releases a “beta” I always use those tests.

Hi Para-Noid,

I periodically test other free AVs (on my test rig) and I have yet to find a better free solution. In fact, I actually prefer Avast Free over my ISPs free “full security suite” which is actually a fully licensed retail version from a major competitor that contains a myriad of functions I don’t want (or need). Thanks for responding!
