I’m almost certain the above can’t be true but my roommate suddenly can’t connect to my network. I haven’t changed anything.
I’m just throwing this out there to try to cover everything I can think of.

Rather depends on what your Firewall settings are ?
If it is set to Private, Trusted network then if may stop your roommate connecting.
I don’t use the Avast Firewall so I’m no familiar with it.

That’s nuts. Another change in the latest update then as he was fine until a few days ago.

Well you didn’t say what your firewall settings are/were now and previously.
As far as I’m aware there weren’t any changes to the settings in the latest update.
Nothing mentioned here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=319760.0 - This latest program update was only released on 1/6/2020 - NEW Avast Version 22.5
