Hi all!
Just installed Avast! yesterday.
So far everything looks fine except that when I hover above the avast on-access scanner icon there is a message:
The Outlook/Exchange provider waiting for you to start running Microsoft Outlook (generally part of Microsoft Office) and probably not used by you since you are using Thunderbird. Just to be clear Microsoft Outlook is a completely different product from Outlook Express which you may also have by default on your system.
Assuming you do not have Microsoft Outlook installed then there is no good reason for you to have the Outlook/Exchange provider running and you can safely use the “Terminate” button for that provider.
Also assuming that you are using an up to date Windows operating system (like Windows XP or Vista) then avast will automatically scan the regular POP and SMTP connections of any email client (including Thunderbird). By regular I mean those connections using the well know POP and SMTP ports in your mail client (110 and 25) tp receive and send your email. If you use a connection to an email server (for example GMail - also know as Googlemail) that requires you to use secured server ports (where you tell Thunderbird to use SLL or TLS for the connection) then avast cannot scan those secured connections (without special extra actions) no matter what email client you use.
I hope this is not too detailed … did it answer your question? If not or if you have more questions please advise.
Hello CikLi & wellcome to the forums!
Avast is working perfect with Thunderbird, It uses an Internet Mail provider to check mails in thunderbird, which is currently active in your case.
The Outlook/Exchange provider is designed to work only with MS Outlook/Outlook Exchange email clients.
So It’s nothing wrong here to me.
Rostyk.
For now, to scan email delivered via secure connections with avast it is necessary to use a free third party program called STunnel to manage the secure links and allow avast to scan the emails.
avast 5 (expected - possibly- late this year) is reported to include equivalent function of STunnel to manage the secure connections and allow the emails to be scanned.
There is discussion of the setup for STunnel in this thread. You can also use the forum Search function to help you find other threads with setup instructions for STunnel.
