a buddy of mine wants to change av’s from symantec to avast.i have been looking around on the forum but cant find a post about how to get rid of all traces of symantec
norton webpage (www.symantec.com) has some removal tools depending on which version of av you are using…try to locate it…
and also…cojo might be able to help you… ;D
hi. shgoh.yes the symantec page does have a uninstall tool only if you cant uninstall through the add\remove.panel.but thanks for the reply…

i personally prefers beclean and easy cleaner
Use the Symantec uninstall tools even if NAV or NIS does seem to uninstall using the Add/Remove Programs method. I did just that and, in conjunction with System Mechanic, have managed to rid my PC of all traces of Symantec. It’s almost worse than a virus!
hi.shgoh.i just install avast and every thing looks good rite now but ill look at technicals post for a cleaner.thanks again…
hi.cjtc.thanks for the reply and that does sound like a good idea.iam going to download the uninstall tool rite now thanks again.
Hi Clearice01
Do be sure to go to exactly the right page for your needs. It’s highly sensitive to
- Whether you had NAV or NIS
- How it was installed … for example, was NAV installed as part of SystemWorks?
- If you’ve had previous versions of NIS/NAV installed from which you upgraded to your current version. You have to follow the procedure for every version you’ve ever had on your machine. And, beware, the tools you use will vary depending on the version of NAV/NIS you’re uninstalling. You must also do it in the right order (newest back to oldest), or it won’t work.
- the version of Windows you’re running.
Depending on the answers to all of these, the procedure will change markedly. If you don’t follow it to the letter, things will be left behind which may confilct with Avast!
I was in the position where I’d had NIS2002, 2003 and 2004 on my machine, upgrading from one to the other. I’d also had SystemWorks 2003 on there as well. I did manage to get rid of it all, but it took a good 90 minutes of effort and countless reboots. Even then, I had to srub the registry with System Mechanic to remove the last remants.
Good luck (you’ll need it)!!
hi.cjtc.the machine is windows xp pro and the only symantec or norton that was ever on this os is symantec corporate.i used the norton uninstaller but the os is slow and slugish.so there has to be some traces left still i cant find eny thing about uninstalling symantec corporate edition…
Clearice, could you see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=4119;start=0#lastPost
Better, if you can search the forums for Norton and my name you will find a lot of references to get rid from NAV…
hi.technical.thanks for the link your always a big help thanks again… ;D ;D.ps i just checked in your post and the registry keysHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers.and found nothing but avast antivirus i quess thats good?
Great! You are free from Symantec!
Did you have any other SystemWorks’ aplication installed in your system? If so, you could have trouble without that driver. If not, you can use avast with confidence 8)
