Can I Auto-Scan USB & Floppy On Insert?

Hello all. We LOVE AVAST here at the office. I talked my boss into changing from Norton to AVAST last year and we are MUCH happier.

My question is - Can AVAST be set up to “auto-scan” any USB or floppy disk inserted into the computers?

Thanks for the help.

Standard Shield (at default settings) will scan any file that is executed and any suspicious file that is opened, created or modified while using USB/floppy.
Welcome to avast forums. I’m an ex-Norton too.
Are you using the Pro version?

Thank you for the propmpt reply. Yes we are using the 4.8 Pro version.

We would like a way to auto-scan any USB or floppy upon inserting the item if possible. Norton had that option I think, but I may be wrong.

Is it possible to set up Avast to do an auto-scan upon inserting either a USB or floppy, or at least have a prompt pop up asking the user if they want to scan the “newly inserted” item?

We have had a few virus get in from clients that brought in both USB and floppy drives and their data was copied to our computers.

Simple answer is no.

However - as Tech advised - if the files are copied then they are opened and will be scanned at that time and any virus detected will stop the copying from happening while an alert is presented.

I assume that auto-run has been turned off on such systems as a precaution.

Thank you again for a fast reply.

OK, we certainly will live without that “auto-scan upon inserting” option.

You mention turning off “auto run.” We can do that, but does that not apply only to CD/DVD’s? If so, how would that help floppy’s and USB’s? I may not correctly understand how that auto run feature works.

Thank you for any additional information/help.

It works for CD and USB drivers, not for floppies.
You can use TweakUI from Microsoft to manage the autorun feature in XP.
Do you use Vista?

According to Microsoft autorun is automatically disabled for floppy drives.

Thank you all. Nope we don’t use Vista. I’ll get TweakUI and do as you have suggested. Thank you again for all your help.

TweakUI is definitely best for WinXP Home edition, if you are using Windows XP Pro then you can also Google for “autorun” and “gpedit” and find easy instructions to use the gpedit function to turn of autorun.
