Can I avoid the direct connection ?

One question, please !
Although I have adjusted “manually update”, avast is connecting to the internet automatically. When I boot the system, it takes about 20 seconds until the connection is made. I would like to start any internet connection only on demand / manually.
The autostart reports these entries:

  • AshMaisv / avast e-mail Scanner
  • Avast! WebScanner
  • Avast! antivirus Service.

Is it possible to avoid the direct internet connection made by Avast ?

Thank you !!

How do you connect to the internet I assume dial-up?

avast checks for updates when you are connected it doesn’t initiate a connection, just checks for the presence of one, so it shouldn’t matter how long it takes to connect.

I’m on dial-up and I have the Program Settings, Update (Basic) set to Ask when update is available (and I don’t have a problem), you can set this to Manual though.

You should ensure that the Program Settings, Update (Connections) are set to the correct method of connection.

How do you connect to the internet I assume dial-up?
= yes
Update (Connections) are set to the correct method of connection
= I set "update" "manually".

do you have another hint ?

thanks !!

No, that should be it if you did as I suggested.

Program Settings, Update (Basic) set to Manual
Program Settings, Update (Connections) set to Dial-Up

What is your OS?
What other hint, you only asked one question?

Program Settings, Update (Basic) set to Manual
= yes
Program Settings, Update (Connections) set to Dial-Up
= it was kept as void, now activated
What is your OS?
= win98se
What other hint, you only asked one question?
= the hint was regarding this topic.

I suppose that due to point #2 (“Dial up”) it is ok now. tomorrow after re-starting, I`ll come back.

Thanks a lot, David !!

Void is not activated. If you don’t choose dial-up, avast will try to search for an update as you’re permantly connected.
You should left unchecked the option ‘permanently connected’ there.

Hopefully you should now be OK, if so I would suggest that you try the Update (Basic) Ask when update is available in conjunction with having set the Update (Connection) to Dial-Up. That way you see a small pop-up if an update is available, you can choose to ignore it but you at least know one is available and you can manually update later.

Those are the settings I use on dial-up and they aren’t too intrusive and I usually choose to update (click the pop-up box) then as they are incremental updates, usually only a few KBs for VPS updates, so they don’t take long at all and you get the extra protection immediately.

;)Hello Tech and David,
you are both absolutly right:
“Connected via Dial-up Modem” has to be activated.
Then the program refuses to connect to the internet automatically.

Thanks a lot to both of you:
