Hi! My friend’s pc(they’re 3 blocks away from our house) has problems…trojan infections, always showing “IE encounters an error and needs to close”, unable to use IE(I use firefox in their pc), etc etc. In short I want to help him and fix his pc with my little bit of knowledge plus consult a forum for his problems BUT I can’t work on his pc in their house since he’s always at work whenever Im free. The best thing to do is to bring his pc to my place so I can work on it uninterrupted. But I am hesitant to offer him to bring his pc to our house because in the past I also brought in a friend’s pc to my place for installation of free antivirus/antispyware BUT I was unable to connect to internet when in fact I don’t have a problem getting internet when Im using my own pc on our broadband connection. I formed the impression then from that time that my friend’s pc is configured to receive internet connection only when in their house BUT will not connect to internet if outside of their house UNLESS some settings/configurations are re-set ???..am I right? or maybe I just totally don’t get it. I really want to help my friend but I am afraid I might not be able to connect to internet again if I brings in his pc to my place. What settings or what configuration do I have to set on my friend’s pc for me to connect to internet in our house. We have the same internet provider(NTL/Virgin Media). Thanks!
If you have wireless does your friends computer have a wireless card, otherwise you’ll need a LAN cable. If you’re using wireless, you’ll need the password. (I hope you have a password set?)
How about using logmein? This will allow you to work on your friends computer in his home while you are in your own home.
The free version wont boot up a computer, but you can get a free trial of Logmein Pro. Pro will be necessary for reboots.
Thanks at last, FreewheelinFrank & rdmaloyjr, for your sensible replies! I will explore and try logmein for later…the idea might just be too advanced for me for now. I’d like to work on my friend’s pc in our house with his unit physically present in front of me.
Im not sure if my friend’s pc uses a wireless card or if my own pc uses a wireless card…my keyboard & mouse are wireless while my friend is all wired…and we both uses single pc in our houses–we’re not on a network. I can’t remember any password except for the password to open my Admin account in our own pc(the limited account in our pc is password protected too) but I don’t suppose that’s relevant.
I am really hoping that using someone else’s pc in our broadband connection will just be the same as in bringing someone else’s telly to our house—connect to mains and connect the cable antenna…and presto there’s picture already. But in my case I don’t know how to connect to internet while using a friend’s pc. Is it supposedly straightforward simple & easy…just connect my friend’s pc to mains and to our modem? It’s just that I failed in the past(first time) that’s why I’m hesitant to do it second time around. Can you give me a step by step procedure to follow to succesfully connect to internet using a stranger’s pc in my broadband connection?
A vote for LogMeIn… a very good remote connection program.
from my experience with this company (from the pre-virgin days, until a few weeks ago) we just had to plug in the modem to a pc via an Ethernet cable.
We used a couple of pc’s with the modem, just switching when needed.
I only had trouble with my laptop, which would only work with the USB cable instead of the Ethernet
however I would say that the remote access option would be the easier way to go, especially if it’s a desktop
hope this helps,

cromwell1230,
If your friend doesn’t have a password to login to his computer then the free version of logmein should be fine. Tell your friend to leave his computer & modem on. Without a password the computer should boot up and connect to the internet automatically with broadband, but you will need to refresh your logmein page after restarting his computer.
I said all this because in the processes required to cleanup from malwares may require several restarts.
Logmein just got really really interesting with Tech vouching for it also BUT, as I said, it seems advanced for me :-[ and I don’t want to spend my time, for now, familiarizing myself with Logmein when in fact I might have a formidable task on my friend’s pc for I don’t know how deep my friends pc is infected. For one, when I installed MBAM on his desktop I could not update it upon finishing installation—a window “Microsoft encounters an error…needs to close” keeps on popping up which when clicked will make the pc to re-start. MBAM scan done without updating revealed more than 300 detections and it’s not even finished yet…I got impatient waiting and just quarantined and close it.
I really hope I can work on his pc in front of me, preferrably in our house, then consult this forum for expert advise. If it’s as easy as “plug & play” I might have been on with the task by now BUT previous experience of mine connecting someone else’s pc to our broadband failed that’s why I want advise on how to properly connect someone else’s pc to my internet connection.
300 detections… depending on which files, consider reinstalling Windows…
