can I renew free updates after expiration date?

Hi all,

I just got a notice from my Avast program that my time is about to expire (may 1). I think I started with 15 months. I saw on the Avast site that the home version can still be downloaded free. Does this mean that I can still get free updates? And if so, how do I do that? ???

thanks
liz

Yes, you can renew free for another 14 months - complete the registration form again and you will be sent a new key - avast! 4 Home Registration

thank you, thank you, thank you, David  liz

Happy to be able to help.

Duh oh, I registered for Avast again. They were supposed to send an email with a new registration key. That was early today, but no email. what’s up with that?

Do they wait until all your time runs out, maybe? My expiration date is May 1.

liz

No, the e-mail should be sent very quickly.
Are you sure you entered a correct e-mail address, or the mail wasn’t discarded by some anti-spam tool?

Thanks, Igor. I made a mistake. On page three I didn’t click on ‘register’ because that was the page to sign up for the beta version, but I went back and registered again and this time I go tthe email.

Now I have a different situation: I copied the email I received below with the new license key. However, I couldn’t figure out a way to just change my key without re downloading the whole program, which I did according to the directions in the email. The new download told me to uninstall first, which I did. Then when I installed the new download, it already had a license key installed, different from this one in the email.

It also said that the program itself expires in June, but the updates expire in 2013???

Can you (or anyone) tell me what that’s about? I assume I won’t be able to get program updates after June without paying (that happened to me with other programs) but will I be just as protected until 2013 with just virus updating?

???
thanks again,
liz

Dear customer,
You were successfully registered for using avast! 4 Home Edition antivirus program. If you have installed older version (AVAST32), be so kind and download and install the current version avast! 4 Home Edition (see below).

Your license key is

---------- cut here ----------
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
---------- cut here ----------

The key is valid for home, personal and non-commercial use on Windows workstation operating systems only!

Commercial versions of avast! can be found at http://www.avast.com/eng/products.html.

You can try our commercial (shareware) products (with the exception of avast! BART CD) for 60 days free of charge.

You can buy avast! 4 Professional & other editions at ShareIt online shop at: http://www.avast.com/eng/desktop_solutions.html.

Insert the license key into avast!4 this way:

  1. If you didn’t before, download the installation file of avast! 4 Home Edition from the webpage http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1016.html
  2. Double click the downloaded file and follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. After installation you will be prompted to restart your computer - restart it.
  4. After restart you will see the blue a-ball icon in your system tray, near clock.
  5. Right-click the blue icon representing the resident protection (a) in system tray and choose “About avast!”, or in simple interface choose MENU → ABOUT AVAST!.
  6. Press the “License key” button in lower right corner.
  7. Enter the license key into prepared text field.
  8. Press OK.

It is recommended to update your virus database and program via the iAVS service to ensure the best protection:
Right-click the blue icon representing the resident protection (a) in system tray and choose UPDATING → PROGRAM UPDATE and iAVS UPDATE. To update virus database only You can just click on the “flash” icon in simple user interface. An active Internet connection is necessary for the update process.

Future updates of virus database will be done automatically. The new updates of software are announced by blue notification windows but you should run them manually.

Regards
ALWIL Software team

Well, how about doing what the items (4)-(7) in the e-mail say?
Simply invoke the “About box” of avast!, click on “License key” and enter the new key there.

The different license key is already entered, there are no blank places to enter a new license key or to change the old one. Everything is already done…???

You don’t have a ‘new’ place but the old one!

  1. After restart you will see the blue a-ball icon in your system tray, near clock.
  2. Right-click the blue icon representing the resident protection (a) in system tray and choose “About avast!”, or in simple interface choose MENU → ABOUT AVAST!.
  3. Press the “License key” button in lower right corner.
  4. Enter the license key into prepared text field.

Hi Tech,

Oh dear, my apologies. :-[ I finally see what I was doing wrong. I thought the registration key and the license key was the same thing. I finally noticed the place to click to enter the license key. When I did that it changed all the info–program expiration never, and date files in 14 months. Problem solved.

Thanks!
