Can I scan a PC that has no internet connection?

Hi everyone

I have aquired a very old PC for my 8 yr old to muck about with. It belonged to a friend, who’s teenager was going on this site and that no really knowing what he was doing.

I installed AVG years ago on the PC for my friend, when AVG was free. Due to them not having this PC online for some time the virus database was last updated on 15.10.04. Pretty old eh?!

So I was wondering whether to install Avast onto this old PC, just to do a once only sweep of it, to make sure it’s clean before my son plays around on it.

But if I install Avast the first thing it’ll try and do is go online to d/l the lastest definitions. Can I get around this at all?

I know for sure that AVG found 11 viruses some being those lovely worms that were circulating recently. So I really don’t want my 8 yr old to be transferring pics from my PC to his (and possibly vice versa) not knowing if the old PC is truley clean.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated

Ofcourse you can. See the options for the connection settings.

No it doesn't. It only checks if there is a connection. If there is then Avast checks for updates.

Hi Eddy,

Thank you for your lightening quick reply!

I will d/l Avast 4 then it’s latest definations now and then hopefully clean the PC, thank you for your reply and for your help

  1. You would really need to uninstall AVG first.
  2. AVG is still free.
  3. You can download the latest avast version and the full avast! VPS Update - Manual Download using another machine and burn to a CD or flash memory stick, etc. and this will give you the latest VPS files. You can use this manual update periodically.
