Can I stop, pause or prevent it from scanning after PC login/waking up?

Everytime I go to my PC and login after it’s been asleep or hibernating for a while, Avast (Free) does a scan. It slows down everything and is a real nuisance. :-[ How can I either prevent it from scanning each time or pause it?

Thanks!

Hi MissKay,

Welcome to the forums.

Best to provide the following information:

 • Avast! program version number
 • Did you change any settings from their default as set new install configurations?
 • Do you have avast! set to run a manual scan automatically?
 • Ever had another antivirus program installed and uninstalled that before installing avast?

Sleep-mode was mend to safe power.
If you want to safe power, simply shutdown your system if you don’t use it.

Hibernation mode was mend to “boot” systems faster.
With nowadays systems it is a obsolete function.

Just don’t use either of them and the problem should be solved.

Is it a scan, or Avast updating? I also use the sleep mode function rather than shutting my pc down. When I wake the system Avast does an update and I have noticed that svc.host is at 50% CPU usage, or higher, during that time.

The svchost.exe (not svc.host), service host is used by many processes not necessarily just by avast. If you have an Svc.host it could well be fake.

Unless you have an analysis tool like SvchostAnalyser to see what processes are running under svchost.exe. See attached images, as you can see it isn’t easy to say it is avast because of svchost.exe activity.

It is easy to say when svchost.exe activity drops back into its normal range as soon the update process is complete.

You can only tell for sure if you look at what is using svchost, not by the percentage that is used and what else is running.

The Avast icon spins in the “hidden icons” area, so I assume it’s doing a scan.

Anyone have a real solution for this?

No solution is needed. This is normal and expected behaviour.

Your spinning avast icon in the system tray area is caused by real-time scanning. Avast is scanning files and processes as they are opened and run on your system.

This is not the same as you starting a full system scan after which you can view how many files were scanned, how many folders were scanned, and how long the scan took to complete.

It is not recommended to disable or turn off real-time scanning as this is your first-line defence against malware or virus infections. Scans you start such as Quick scan or Full Scan are your secondary line of defence. They won’t help to prevent infections from happening in the first place, as your real-time scanning will. Manual scans are always used to clean up the mess afterwards.
