Avast keeps telling me that my Windows needs to be updated, when there is just one “optional” update - that is the Bing desktop. No thank you! But, I tried one suggested solution: clicking though to the Windows update window, right clicking to “hide update” but… it’s still there. It does not go away.
Any other suggestions for telling MS to stop bugging me about installing the Bing desktop? Or to Avast to tell me not to bug me about “optional” updates?
PS: I am running Windows Hate (8) on this convertible laptop/tablet - an underpowered, unloved, HP Envy 2x. (Unless you are interesting in suing HP for selling you a virtually unusable machine, like me… don’t buy one of these!)
@ crista
It isn’t notifying you about an Optional update but a problem with IE 10 needing to be updated (the file properties reports the incorrect build number) and it sends you to windows update to do that, where it finds everything up to date, other than the optional update for Bing.
IT’s WORSE
Avast software update flags a minor IE version update as CRITICAL
IE updates require shutting down IE and with IE’s prefetcher just shutting the browser down does not work youeither have to update at boot time or use “System Explorer” to kill the running ie process
Then you have to reboot again after the update
BTW Window update shows “no update available”
Avast has not been bugging me about bling desktop ???
It is critical because it is your browser, not to mention IE is also integral to some OS functions, so yes if there was an IE update available then it would be considered critical.
Did you read the other topic I gave the link to as that shows why it is flags as MS has the wrong version number in the file properties of iexplore.exe.
Avast (doesn’t give a stuff about the optional) Bing Desktop update it doesn’t monitor it; that is windows Update showing that is the only update ‘optional’ outstanding.
Evidently not Critical enough for Windows update to find it
only the last two digits of the MS version number changed after the decimal point
No Bulletin issued MS never called it critical only your alarmist update program
