can install avast home - PLEASE HELP

I have been trying for almost 20 hours to install avast home on my laptop. I have used avast for years and LOVE it and have NEVER had this trouble getting it on a computer!

I have downloaded the Cnet version and both the universal and the english (larger) version straight from the avast site, each time it failed and I would delete the temporary file (nothing to uninstall because it never gets that far) and try again after a reboot. I have also tried to just RUN it from the website without downloading it (setupeng.exe) and it gets as far as the “downloading packages-Downloading file: setupeng.exe” and then I get “Connectin terminated - retrying”. Do I need to change the proxy settings? I know it has an option to at the start of all this, but wouldnt know what to put in there, as I have never had to do that before.

I am on a wireless network with a password, is that whats cousing this - shouldnt be, as my laptop is connected just fine… but Im running out of ideas.

I have vista on my laptop and am close to just getting another program to protect it… but will give this forum a shot first because Id really rather stay with avast if we can figure this out.

Try to use avast removal tool
You can download it here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

So much installation problem these days

What was your previous antivirus on the computer? This can often be the cause of problems. And also make sure to use avast uninstall utility to clean up after yr uninstall, as mentioned above.

I guess it is avast because"I have used avast for years and LOVE it and have NEVER had this trouble getting it on a computer"

Please don’t post multiple topics for the same issue it just duplicates effort for those trying to help.

I have answered your first topic created 13 minutes before this one, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53496.0.

I guess there was no one replying this post so the newbie thought that no one saw his/her topic and reposted one again

yep, total nuwbie! But my computer wasnt loadign the page so I thought it didnt poost, i’ll delete the other one now, sorry guys!!

This is a new laptop that came with Norton. Norton has been totally removed from the laptop and there is NO antivirus on it now. I do not need to uninstall avast, because there is no avast… thats the problem, it wont install at all. right now I HAVE NO ANTI VIRUS on this computer. I have checked the add/remove programs and there is not program there to remove, and my computer’s security center tells me that it cannot find an antivirus and the laptop is unprotected.

As for downloading it to the laptop aqnd installing it that way, I HAVE TRIED that too and stated that in my original post. see my frustration. I have tried everythign I can think of and all things that have been posted thus far. Do I need to give up on avast??

Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! ;D

What in a whole 13 minutes, the avast forums are fast by comparison to virtually all I have used but not quite that fast. Posting it in the General forum didn’t help as the avast 4.x Home/Pro would be the correct forum and may have got a even quicker response than a little over an hour in the General forum.

That’s where simply bumping the original topic brings it to the top of the chronological list is better as it doesn’t create duplication.

You should try the norton uninstaller if you previously have a norton installed before on this laptop
I don’t know where to get the uninstaller but I think DavidR will be able to give you

Patience needed:)

Thanks,
Shiw Liang

You can’t delete topics only moderators can and you may yet still have to do a clean reinstall as I outlined.

You will most certainly have to ensure all remnants of Norton are gone, a real pig to remove.
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
Or ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

True but I don’t think the two antivirus issue was always such as problem as it is now. Similar problem myself where I had trialled AIS and later had to remove the firewall from my system which by then was running 4.8.

Edit - and is now running avast 5 with some minor problems - will have to re-install after registry clean.

 I may just need a good cry! I tried the norton uninstal up posted (thanks Dave) and get the error: Internet Explorer cannot download Norton_Removal_Tool.exe from ftp.symantic.com, teh operation timed out. I got a “timed out” error when trying to download the avast from the other link you posted to my HDD. What am I doning wrong or do I just need to throw my laptop away? lol

what if you trie here?
http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/

I know Im grabing at straws here, but after doing a serach through the program folder (finding no norton or other antivirus software) I did a search on the C drive and D (backup) drive and the only thing that came up was a windows comand script on the C drive under NIS C:\System.sav\util Does that mean anything to anyone?

I did use the Norton unistaller that comes with the program when I uninstaled it from my control panel in the first place, so do I really need to download an uninstaller still? I will, but wanted you to have that info too incase I didnt need to.

Sorry to be such a drok, Im just ready to be done with all the drama and have this “simple and easy to use” program installed and running already. Thanks for all the help and advice…

not sure what I need to do next?

update - I think there may be a problem downloading stuff! ::slight_smile: I just tried to download Yahoo Instant messager and it froze on the download as well… so, any advice on how I get around this one? I probably already have a virus in trying to download avast and norton uninstall tool - hah. MAN, I hope not!!!

Unfortunately the Norton add remove programs uninstall is about as much use as a chocolate ashtray as these forums are littered with the topics related to what the normal uninstall left behind and causes conflicts with the new security software you later try to install.

So yes you really do need to download the other uninstall tool, that is why we suggest it in the first place.

If you aren’t using a download manager I would suggest you try one as that can resume dropped/failed downloads. I have been using Orbit downloader for some years and no problems (http://www.orbitdownloader.com/), of course you have to be able to download that first (chicken and egg), but it isn’t a big download, about 2.5MB.

I wonder why while downloading it freezes it seems strange…Hey don’t go to any unknown website without an antivirus or else you’ll be like a person without clothes in a snow storm ;D
