Can not connect to internet...help!

Hi,

Im using window vista…right now my computer can not connect to the internet. I tried IE and Firefox, both doesn’t work.
Router is fine, connection with other PC is fine too.

my computer right now have Avast and Norton. I’m trying to uninstall Avast, but unsuccessful and I tried to uninstall Norton, it was unsuccessful too…

I also restore backup to a couple months ago…but still the same…can not access to the internet.

when I turn on my windows security center—>Malware protection–>then I tried to turn on Avast, it says “program cannot activate resident part (Standard Shield provider not found”…

by having two anti virus was that the reason I’m not able to connect to the internet?? Can someone please help me out on this?? maybe uninstall avast or norton and reinstall one of them??? by the problem right now is I can not uninstall either one of them…

Thanks alot

When avast finds the presence of another AV it may not install fully to avoid a conflict which could lock your system.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

What you need to do is:

  1. Download the latest version of avast if you didn’t save it to your HDD before. Use that when you reinstall.

  2. Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  3. Remove Norton:
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
    a) download the Norton removal Tool instructions, etc. in the above link.
    b) uninstall Norton using windows add remove programs and reboot.
    c) run the Norton Removal Tool.

  4. Do a clean reinstall of avast:

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Well… you won’t connect and you can have deep problems with two antivirus at a time.

  1. Remove NAV or Norton 360 through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Norton Removal Tool for Windows 98/Me. Boot.
  3. Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.

Were the two antivirus installed at that time?

avast is not correctly installed in your computer.

Sure. Two antivirus conflict…

Hi Kinkin,

Welcome to the forum.

yes… it’s a big No No (as in you should never do this unless you are a very advanced user and are fully aware of what you are doing…)

Download aswClear from the following link:
http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

Download the Norton Removal tool from the following link:
http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

-Reboot into safe mode
-Run the Avast uninstall Utility.
-Run the Norton Removal tool
-Reboot into normal
-Install the Av of your choice
-Reconnect, get updates.
Save them to the desktop.

Restart the computer in safe mode.

Run aswClear

Run Norton Removal tool

Restart the computer normally and reinstall either Avast! or Norton (your choice… but not both)

Hope this helps…

EDIT: Hi Tech,
Wrote this before seeing your post.
@Kinkin: Follow Tech’s listed steps… and if it doesn’t work run aswclear as listed and reinstall avast.
REMEMBER: follow what Tech wrote first, nd post back with results.

And mine was before Tech’s, at this rate ‘kinkin’ will think we are ganging up on him ;D

So so Sorry. I didn’t see your post till now… good point.
Just felt the need to mention aswclear.

That is mentioned in my post too ;D
The Uninstall Utility and the ‘Get it Here’ is a link to it.

One thing about this forum, the people can’t complain that no one answers them ;D

Now we have to wait for ‘kinkin’ to get back to us ;D

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone of you…you guys Rocks!!!

After I use Norton removal to get rid of the Norton, now I have access to the internet.

Then I use the Avast clear to remove avast and reinstall it…everything seems back to normal now…

Thanks a million!!! ;D ;D

No problem, glad I could help.
