Avast moved a file to Virus Chest and I can not restore from Virus Chest >Restore button.
Error thrown: Whops error occurred. This file can’t be restored.
Settings were all on default on a new install.
Noted the settings for Components>File Shield>Action
The settings are “Fix auto” if a file is found fix it if not move it to chest and if it can’t move it delete it.
So there is good chance this file is completely gone right.
Ah I have read about this fix. I do not get a different result and I do not get a different screen. Maybe on older versions this was true.
Win10 64
Avast build: 18.3.3860.316
By the way for everyone this is a very scary thing. The file that Avast nuked belongs to a very important program I require for work (Creo 3d design app). The program no longer works. Avast never gave an option to ignore the file or anything actually. A popup came up saying to restart the computer. So there are probably lots of people in the same situation. Reinstalling is a huge time consuming pain plus I will lose all custom settings and such.
Wow, this just happened to me also. And, again, a file (a program) that I need for work. How can an anti-virus program not give me the option of restoring a file that I know it has incorrectly quarantined (though “quarantined” doesn’t seem to be the right word, since I can’t get to the file at all, that I know of).
Luckily, it will only take me 5-10 minutes to restore the file but if this happens again, I guess I’d have to go with an alternative AV.
If it’s any help, when I checked on the version, I saw a message saying a restart is needed but I hit the Update button (for the program) instead and was then prompted to restart, which I did. It didn’t make any difference; I still can’t restore the file. I disabled all protections and tried again; still no luck.
I don’t think it is for this kind of situation. It’s primarily intended to restore the underlying system to a working configuration. In my case, it was a program that was installed to my home folder (in some cases, it might not even have used an installer). This is essentially unrecoverable unless I’ve recently made a backup that included the program that was erroneously quarantined.
The same thing happened on another computer of mine, with the same program. In both situations, I believe Avast had just updated its program. Luckily, in the second case, I was given the opportunity to stop Avast quarantining the program (this was on Win 7, in the first case, I was on Win 10 and wasn’t given the opportunity to cancel the quarantine). Since restoring the program (by reinstalling), I haven’t seen the issue.
Do Avast staff respond here? I’d like to know why I was not able to restore from the vault and why that restore failure was accompanied by a useless error message.
