I’m thinking about replacing Zone Alarm Free Firewall with something else. One of those “something else” that I am considering is Online Armor Free (I haven’t tried it since Emsisoft took over). I would like to know if I should remove Avast’s Web Shield before installation. Of course, if I do experience problems, the first thing I’ll do is remove Avast’s Web Shield should I not have done so already.
It is a good idea to exclude Avast! from OA coverage because of possible interference-there is an “exclude” tab in OA where you just add the Avast! folder. As far as the Web Shields, in spite of the name the OA Web Shield is not an AV-it validates DNS addresses and allows you to block specific domains. Should be no interference with the AV watching http traffic in Avast!.
In theory, there is no problem on using OA and avast WebShield.
But, like sded said, you can make mutual exclusions.
Ah, thanks for clearing up the differences between Online Armor’s Web Shield and Avast’s Web Shield. That’s what I was wondering (if they served the same purpose and would therefore conflict).
Take a gander at my signature. I have been using OA Free and have had absolutely no issues with avast! I like the fact that OA Free has a “learning mode” it makes everything so much simpler. The only time I get a pop-up is when software needs to update or change something. If that happens OA Free will kick in. Just like it should. Online Armor Free is very user friendly. If that helps. I would get rid of ZA as it could conflict with avast! Whatever you decide, I wish you well.
Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll go ahead and do that, however, I want to make sure the computer doesn’t experience anymore BSOD’s and find the culprit first.
