Can only log on in safe mode

I did a scan and place several item in the chest and when I rebooted, I couldn’t log on except in safe mode. When loading I only get the "Avast Home with license and memory test. After test it closes down and I can’t see AVAST. How do I get to the main screen to see chest and restore the items that caused my problem. In safe mode the icon is not in the lower bar. Thanks, Ernest

Hi…

When you go to safe mode, only the basic services and processes needed to run the OS are loaded into memory. That’s why there’s no tray icon for avast.

Just to clarify, are you accessing avast from the start menu? Also, does your system boot into safe mode repeatedly?

Best Regards…

Thanks

Yes, repeatedly boots in mode that states normal and safe mode options. Normal will not load. Have tried retore to earlier point, but will not. Load Avast from Start , Desktop and program and same happens.

Hi…

To be frank, it sounds like whatever your system was infected with (possibly) latched onto some system file(s) of some kind. I would need to know the names of the viruses or trojans to try and get an idea of their payload and what they’re designed to do. It doesn’t sound like Avast was able to clean or replace them, so putting them back isn’t really going to solve this problem.

I think what you’re going to have to do is perform a repair install of your OS, if you’re running Windows 2000, XP or Vista. If you’re running 9x/ME, I think you’ll need to reinstall from scratch. If you installed your version of Windows, you will need the CD. If you bought your system with Windows pre-installed and it has a seperate system restore partition, the procedure is a bit different. Contact your system manufacturer for assistance or you can look in your computer’s user manual, it might explain it there as well.

Here are a couple links to give more details (if you’re running Windows XP)…

Please be advised that these procedures MIGHT involve the loss data on your system. If you need to reinstall from scratch, it WILL definately involve data loss unless you performed backups. :frowning:

Ardvark, SIR, “unless you do backup”, too where or what ?. I may just have to do what you suggested, but how ? ??? (To me it looks like you would have to do a reinstall of apps. any way, if reinstaling your OS from scratch). I may have missed something. Thanks.

Do I detect sarcasm? If so, why? ???

EDIT: Ok, I think I know why. Is it because I capitalized MIGHT and WILL? If so, I was only trying to emphasize my point, I wanted to make sure that the possibility of data loss was understood. I didn’t mean to sound rude in any way, I apologize. :frowning:

Backups of files and applications (as “setup” files) can be stored in zip drives, external hard drives, USB thumb drives, etc., and yes, all of your applications would have to be reinstalled after reinstalling from scratch.

Wow, no sarcasm was meant at all !!!, and your edit was very helpful to me. ???

Hi…

Ok, cool.
