I would prefer sites to open in a new tab, not on top of the previous one. Is this possible? In Firefox I find this ability valuable in that it is easier and quicker when switching back and forth between sites. I have Avast Pro.

It is easy, just click the link by middle mouse button.
Unfortunately there is no setting to make it for left mouse button.
How about the right mouse button ? ;D
