Can someone explain to me how on earth the new version is better? Coz it isn't.

I’ve been using Avast! Anti-Theft for years. I even bought premium ages ago and kept it right up until they removed it. Most of the time I also had Avast! Internet Security on my PCs too and I was also paying for that, until that software got so bad that I ended up removing it. Still, on mobile - Avast! still had by far, the best solution to theft protection. So I kept it on my phone.

Then you guys took away the rooted installation app. Tons of features were just lost completely. You can blame it on updates to Android that made some of those features stop working, but I and tens, if not hundreds of millions more people are in no rush to update our phones to the latest version of Android, so those features still worked. After the removal of the rooted app, I was absolutely crushed and the difference between Avast! and competitors was made MUCH smaller. We know for a fact that you could have kept developing those features and even worked together with Xposed users, but you just dropped all rooted development entirely, even though those features gave people MORE control and MORE options with their devices.

After that premium features were removed and made for free. A small victory for some, a huge victory for many. But it wasn’t to last at all. As you split up the features in 1 app and released tons of different ones, forcing people to download them instead of just leaving the features in the Anti-Theft app.

Now what, with this new, even MORE stripped down and ugly version that doesn’t REMOTELY resemble anything from Avast! I am supposed to believe that this is the ‘best version of Anti-Theft yet’? Where are the new features? Hell, where are the OLD features we loved? There are LESS features in the new app, when compared to the old one…

What happened to the following features?

  1. The good old way of downloading your own custom Anti-Theft package, and being able to rename it to whatever you want in order to confuse thieves. - Gone
  2. Taking a picture of a person when they enter your unlock code incorrectly too many times - Gone?
  3. Invisible Binary commands - Gone?
  4. App locker - Gone? Or at least, put into another useless app that I have to install just to get this feature, when it was perfect whilst included in the Anti-Theft app.
  5. The ability to deny program settings access to a thief if the phone is marked as lost - Gone, but what… now it’s back again?
  6. Uninstall protection when wiping the phone, so Anti-Theft still exists after a full wipe - Gone
  7. App uninstall protection with PIN (even if phone isn’t locked) - Gone
  8. Anti-Theft app uninstall/device admin removal protection (even if phone isn’t locked) - Gone
  9. Geofencing - Gone in the new app

Look at all those features that don’t exist any more! What about many more? They all just disappeared. So I’m supposed to think that my device is protected now, by this ‘free’ software that has no premium options any more. No rooted permissions, no nothing. Someone can just wipe my phone, and bam the protection is gone.

Why did you guys kill what was such a good product? I mean it’s no secret that people now think your PC Anti-Virus and Internet Security suites have fallen greatly over the last 2 years and that they now resemble the very malware that they claim to remove. Why did you add all these useless features to what was the world’s best protection against malicious attacks to your personal data and devices?

Can someone please explain how this stripped down, feature-less Mobile security app is even remotely as good as the App I just uninstalled? Because now I probably reinstall back the older version, or remove it completely to move to a competitor. I thought apps are meant to be improved and features are supposed to be gradually added, not gradually removed…

3] Blame it on Google, they made it impossible.
4] You can still lock app’s with a pin
6] It is still there. But don’t forget a factory reset will wipe anything, no mather what protection a app has.
7] Not 100% sure, but I believe you can’t remove a app if it is protected by a pin.

by this 'free' software that has no premium options any more.
It sure does have some of the former premium options.
Someone can just wipe my phone, and bam the protection is gone.
It always has been possible to wipe everything and reset to factory default.

I’ve been using avast for many long years, and I have to agree with the general thought. In fact, my last renewal of my licenses was for only one year, even though I could have had a very sizable discount going multi-yearly. I did this on purpose because I have seen a great decline in their products.

BTW you can add to your list that the new Anti-Theft cannot be setup if you do not use a Google account, and all my licenses are linked to a NON-Google account. I’m getting angry by the minute every time there’s a new change to avast products. I might have to find a new anti-theft app now, because I am presently without ANY protection on my phone thanks to this. Like the whole world uses ONLY Google accounts, right?

This only pushes me next year to look way closer to other products when it comes time to renew all my licenses. No longer does avast have my blind confidence.

Yes I can say that most people use google+ accounts such as the one I am using on here. Google accounts are not protected they only have password and that is what would bother many so if this topic you discuss is of concern towards device safety trust me it would go farther than that. not only do you gotta watch out for what sites you go on some cases malware protections or virus scanners are ineffective and even spyware or hackers to some degree could bypass any kind of firewalls more less anti-theft doesn’t do anything so truly no device is safe unless you own some kind of electronic setup ranging from the most powerful super computers in the world. Tis the truth so if you want true safety from all the bad stuff on the internet or the “bad people” who try to ruin your day you gotta be smart and not just open up things willy nilly, i lost one of my devices from opening up just an email and then they hijacked my device and were tracking it. short end to the story. i smashed it in fear of having someone finding my home.

I moved to Cerberus. I can’t believe for years I avoided trying that app because it had an old Gingerbread looking intro vid on the Google play store.

You can do anything with this anti-theft app. Honestly Avast! could learn something from them…

You can prevent people turning off the phone or putting it in aeroplane mode from the lockscreen (sure they can still do a battery pull but hey whatever).
You can prevent them from pulling down the notification bar to turn on/off wifi/gps etc. from the lockscreen. Very handy.
App has all the basic features, location tracking, siren, wipe remotely etc.
Advanced features, take picture anytime you want (front and back cam), record video any time you want (in high quality), and also record audio. All of these are instantly emailed to you.
You can app lock with a PIN.
You can force the GPS on if you root the phone and make it a system app.

There’s too many features to list and so far they all work for me on Android 6.0. Sure I don’t want to advertise for them here but why the heck Avast! doesn’t have these options? We used to have most of these options, and bear in mind. These are all options that are available to someone WITHOUT root, (except the last one). Seriously what is the excuse Avast? You release consistently more stripped down versions of what used to be an amazing app. Are you trying to ruin your company image or something? Where is all that money going to use in releasing an app that has 10x less features than it used to? You can’t blame it on Google’s doing, I’m using an app that has not only ALL of the features your app used to have, BUT MORE!

It’s safe to say I will never be coming back. I was happy to support you for so many years, even back since the glory days where Avast looked like this I recommended you to everyone and probably installed your products on over 500 machines:

Today that support ends. I refuse to risk losing my phone due to your inferior service… I’m really sorry but I’m voting with my feet.

Mate you might love Avast! heck you might even work for them but you can’t deny their service has fallen so drastically from 2 years ago.
Also you used to be able to protect your phone from a full wipe with their anti-theft. Even from a custom recovery, after reinstalling the ROM Avast would persist and ask for your unlock password, but nope, not any more.

Also it’s possible to remove the recovery partition so no one can use that to wipe the phone. There’s always a way.

Hi, sorry for the inconvenience.

We decided to rewrite the app to further offer it.
The reasons for that were mainly the gradual changes in Android APIs and closing of the platform with each new version of the OS.
And also the fact that the app was too difficult to set up and use for most of our users.

So we decided to simplify the app and remove some features.
The removed features were either difficult/impossible to support on new versions of the platform
or were used only by a very small fraction of our users.

Some features you mention are still present in the new Anti-Theft or another Avast app:

  1. Taking a picture of a person when they enter the unlock code incorrectly too many times.
The app also records audio of the person. The files are available on my.avast.com.

  2. Invisible Binary commands.
The commands can be sent from the app.

  3. You can use Avast App Locker app for that.

  4. The ability to deny settings access to a thief if the phone is marked as lost.
Settings are then protected with Anti-Theft PIN.
Or you can use Avast App Locker to protect it all the time.

  5. Anti-Theft app uninstall/device admin removal protection.
App uninstall is blocked by active device admin even when the device is not marked as lost.
Device admin removal is blocked when the settings are protected.
Anti-Theft protects the settings when the device is marked as lost.
If you want to protect the settings all the time you can use Avast App Locker.

We plan to evaluate which Anti-Theft features our users miss the most.
If there is a real demand we might gradually add them back.

I’m considering that exact same app if Avast is not “Johnny-on-the-spot” and fixes so that I can use my email in the next few days. Seems very similar to the original Avast Anti-Theft, just not in-love with their web interface, but seems adequate enough.

If not, I’m switching all my Avast to Comodo, since they also seem to have apps that are very close to what Avast used to offer.

The feature I missed most is the possibility to survive a Factory-Reset and the other features you need root for.
That was the reason I bought it, back in 2011.
R.I.P. Theft Aware.

Same here! the wipe protection has been the best feature to me.

The reason why i rooted my phone was precisely this feature. I too will be looking at alternatives to this horrible app that was once great.

Difficult to support eh? I wonder how other developers continue to support at least some features of them… I really wonder how! Even if they have a fraction of your budget!
Concerning the majority of your users, they are just idiots. They just ask US, the power users, what antivirus or antitheft to install and WE tell them the best. Guess what is going to happen next… Also, next time consider making some apps with Mikey Mouse, and Bob Squarepants on notifications to tell the common user how to delete cache every hour… Maybe the majority of them gonna appreciate it…

Yeaaaah… If the thief is idiot enough to not turn Internet off…

And here, you become completely hilarious!!! Thank you avast!
Because as anyone knows, there is ΝΟΟΟΟΟΟΟΟ other way to turn wifi off, or mobile data, or turn air mode on… ONLY by the settings app! And, so, you have to make your life misery to insert a PIN every time you actually need something in settings… Ha ha ha. Well said Avast… My grandma has been persuaded…

Oh well done! who else could have though it? So the thief will make a factory reset from recovery and bye bye phone… Or worse…
The common thief will do this, from the beginning. The common thief will not flash a ROM. He will just make a factory reset by recovery. It is easy and quick. So a common thief WAS actually screwed by your OLD app (with some obvious settings) and he is COMPLETELY UNAFFECTED by your NEW app…
Continue your good work Avast… We will uninstall you even from everywhere, in some time, with such a progress…

Sorry for my ironic or even somewhat extreme touch. You really have to wake! You screw your work and you screw your main customers. They are not going to like it. And maybe act the same back…
