I have submitted 3 tickets? and have received no response. Getting a bit miffed with avasts so called help!
This is a strange one im hoping that you in the community have experienced and can give advice or just tell me im being silly and its nothing to worry about.
I was running low on my hard drive space…doen to about 2gb…so i deleted a movies file i had (baby einstein Vids) to free up 14.2gb. This gave me 14.4GB. After a couple og hours playing games i opened my C drive to discover that my 14.4GB had gone down to 11GB. I wondered what the hell had happened. I had downloaded nothing so i ran malware…this reported nothing, then i ran avast quick scan…it picked up 6 viruses. Then i ran complete scan and this picked up 27viruses…then i ran boot time scan and it picked up something like 175 viruses and took 12hours. I moved all these to chest then deleted from chest. Clean temp internet files/ran disk cleanup and deleted a few other movies file (samurai collections) to get myself 36GB hoping that i had solved the problem.
Last night to today i have ran quick scan and malware no viruses found but i have not downloaded anything just a bit of web browsing and game playing and my 36GB has gone down to 34.9GB.
I am concerned about having some kind of virus that is eating my hard drive space. albeit very slowly. It is annoying the ccrap out of me…i dont really want to reformat my machine as i dont want to lose my data…but if there is no solution forthcoming i shall be forced to do that.
The Avast ticket system seems completely useless…which i find dissapointing seeing as though i am not using the free avast…it seems i am paying good money for an antivirus system that doesnt stop viruses and a company that doesnt care. I feel very let down and stranded with a possible virus that is slowly eating my machine alive…arrrrggghhhh.
Should have listened to my wife and joined her on mcaffe.
Please…if anyone has experienced this problem and has a solution any advice would be greatly appreciated…I am a virus novice and thought that avast was protecting my system…it may well be and it may be auto updates that is eating away at my disk space but ive lost over 1GB today alone does that mean that by in 30 days i shall have lost 30GB?
I am running a dell inspiron laptop on windows 7 64bit.
I have ran avast scan and malware since and it still shows no viruses but something is causing my hard drive to lose MB/GB.
Please help restore my faith in avast before i cancel my subscription reformat my lappy and go to another anti virus provider…which is a shame because i really liked the avast interface…but nice interface and flashy doodads are useless if they are not actually protecting my machine.
Plus their customer support really sucks.
Peace hope someone ou there can help…it driving me nuts
Great in the 20 mins since i posted this i have done nothing but refresh this page and it has gone down to 34.6GB what is causing this loss of hard drive space?
Well in all honesty using the support ticket in respect to a possible virus infection isn’t ever going to be very effective (even if you got a prompt response. No virus infection is likely to be exactly the same and its analysis/detection and removal are best dealt with by malware removal specialists.
If your hard disk is/was down to 2GB is a serious issue in its own right as it has nothing to work with, even getting it up to 36GB of free space isn’t great as things like system restore and your pagefile.sys can get pretty big. Unless that represents over 20% of the total size of the hard drive/partition you really are looking a drive upgrade. Windows defrag won’t run unless you have 15% free space, so you could also have a heavily fragmented drive,
If you can give some examples of the detections found, file name, location and malware name that could help us to help you.
This needs further analysis by a malware removal specialist:
Go to this topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 for information on Logs to assist in cleaning malware. Use the information about getting and using the tools and attach the logs here, not in the LOGS topic.
Look im really sorry i cannot be of more help but im really out of my depth here…im used to surfing and gaming not cpu surgery.
Maybe i should just take it into a computer repair shop…or reinstalll windows.
Looking in the avast chest (avastUI, Maintenance, Virus Chest), will give you more information (if you sent them to the chest on any of the scans) and with that many detections one of the important things is the type of malware found as with big numbers that if all the same malware name could be a file infecter. But if this were the case you would most likely be getting real time detections on the File System Shield.
Yes there is a support number, but it is run by a 3rd party and unless it is avast related they will offer a premium service and this isn’t cheap. And there have been instances were it is more high pressure sale of their premium service.
If you can try gather some more information on the detections found and try to work through the analysis tools indicated in that link I gave. Whilst that can seem daunting when you look at it all together, taken a step at a time it is manageable.
The sooner you can get some of these analysis logs attached the sooner a specialist can look at it and try to help, but they need these analysis logs to be able to effectively help.
That said even when you get the logs posted, there may be some delay due to differing time zones and availability of the volunteer malware removal specialists. Unfortunately that is me for the night, it is almost 1am here.
Just one last thing…if i reinstall windows 7 wiping my hard drive will that fix the issue? and can i just post my avast licence back in to get avast back up and running if i email it to myself. Its been about 3 years since ive had this machine and it has a lot of crap on it…and seeing as though i can reinstall my games… i dont really care about my vids and music.
If you save your license.avastlic, yes you can use that again if you have it saved. Or you can have it resent - Resend avast License http://www.avast.com/resend-license-paid.php, you will need to enter the email that you used when purchasing the license, e.g. the one that the original email with the link was sent.
