I have a download virus that is effecting most files that I download. Can the virus also corrupt the Avast definition updates that I get everyday?
hey! it deepens on what type of infection it is. the self protection module in avast prevent malware from shut it down. But there is malware that could bypass that and shut avast down.
if you need a check please follow this guide and attach the needed logs from there a malware expert will help you.

we need the logs from adwclener, mbab otl and aswmbr
My answer would be no it can’t corrupt the virus definition updates. The downloaded updates are integrity checked by the avast process. If they were corrupt then it should be reported as such would be my best guess.
Are you getting any such errors ?
Well it turned out that my hard drive was mechanically failing at the same time that Avast was virus chesting several viruses. So I can’t post the logs from all the different virus/malware scanners I used because the hard drive is no more. Thank you for all your help. Tip: Backup and then backup your backups…
You’re welcome.
Thanks for coming back to report the source of the problem.
Yes, you certainly need a robust backup and recovery strategy and that really needs to be something like hard drive imaging software. With the hard drive images stored on an internal or external secondary drive.
