as a antivirus , and what should I do to tell Zone Alarm that it’s my anti virus program.

No, ZA doesn’t recognize avast! I honestly don’t know if it recognizes any other than Zone Alarm’s own AV product.
No worries, though. The two work fine together as long as you don’t use Zone Alarm’s Privacy Guardian (ZA Pro only) with avast!
My version of ZA Free recognizes avast … but then, I use a version of ZA before it was crapped up with junk. (version 6.1)

Who is they here? ZoneLabs made very little effort to solve this problem that is, as far I know, on their (ZoneLabs) side and not Alwil side.

ignore requests to update their detection of anything except their own Anti virus product.

Zonelabs(i hate them & their firewall BTW) … As far as i am aware this has been dragging on like for ever. Good thing that i am on Comodo firewall.
that’s why i now using pctools firewall plus on both of my computers and sh-t! zonealarm isn’t even vista ready YET!
