I have not had an update on avast for about a month. Uninstalled and reinstalled and still get the same message. “Cannot connect to the server”. Any help out there?

Can you try Avast GUI → Settings → Updates → Direct connection (no proxy) ?
Then save the settings and reboot please. Report back if that was enough.
Thank you ady4um. That did the trick. I did struggle quite a bit trying to understand what a gui is, but kept pushing buttons until I found the other items you mentioned. What is a GUI?
