Cannot access 127.0.0.1 for email

Every since I upgraded to Windows XP I cannot use the 127.0.0.1 protocol and have Avast get my mail. I get the following error message.

The connection to the server has failed Account A1G, server 127.0.0.1 protocol POP3, port 110, secure (SSL) no. socket error 10061, error number 0x800CCC0E.

I am using Avast 4.7 home edition.

Here is what I have tried so far:

Insert LOG=20 into aswmaisv.log. No help.

I am running Zone alarm Pro 6.5.

I removed ashmaisv.exe in the control part of ZA. Rebooted. Tried to connect to get mail, no go with 127.0.0.1 but if I try with the regular setup, postoffice.worldnet.att.net and mail.worldnet.att.net I get the Avast internet mail is trying to access the internet but I did not get this with account setup with 127.0.0.1.

I also tried it without ZA up and running. Same thing, no access.

I am using outlook express for my mail.

I am the computer administrator.

With Windows 2k\XP, since old avast 4.5 there is a new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exist. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages. Can you make a try and see if it’s ok? Thanks.

New email detection is automatic and do not require user interaction. Anyway, spam killer applications need manually change email account settings

Every since I upgraded to Windows XP I cannot use the 127.0.0.1 protocol and have Avast get my mail. I get the following error message.

Did you reinstall avast (uninstall, reboot, install) I suspect not ?
The old email account settings don’t appear to have been reset to the original settings, which had to be changed to allow avast to scan them. Your email programs (?) needs to have the account settings set to what they were.

-- MAIL SETTINGS The server address for both POP and SMTP should be set to 127.0.0.1 The POP server name set to: username#pop.isp.com (use the actual username and ISP info) and... SMTP server name to: username#smtp.isp.com
If this is what they look like now and you need to set the server to point to "postoffice.worldnet.att.net and mail.worldnet.att.net" plus you need to remove the "#pop.isp.com and #smtp.isp.com" bits after the username.

Let me add some data here. Under windows ME, all email went thru 127.0.0.1, pop3 and SMTP. Account name was A1G#postoffice.worldnet.att.net. This is all is all on the servers page with my server requires auth checked. On outgoing mail server I have checked log on using, #mailhost.worldnet.att.net with password and remember checked. I could send and receive my emails and it was marked scanned by avast and clean.
I now goto Windows XP and with the above it does not work. If I use postoffice.worldnet.att.net for pop3 and mailhost.worldnet.att.net for smtp and account name and password and skip the my server requires auth I can receive and send email but I get no statement that it has been checked and clean by Avast even though I have it checked in the Avast section to say that.
Is Avast still scanning my email even though its not saying it has and putting it into my email?
Joe

There should be no # in front of the server address just mailhost.worldnet.att.net.

Ensure the Insert note into clean messages is ticked in the POP, SMTP or others that you want it shown. Personally I put it in the SMTP only, but its value is very limited, anyone that emails me their email gets scanned and I take no notice of whether or not it has been scanned by an AV. There are even malware emails that have notes that they have been scanned by X antivirus to lul the recipient into a false sense of security.

You can check email headers you should see something like this:

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 000724-1, 16/03/2007), Inbound message X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

You should also see the avast email icon on the system tray and the avast icon should also rotate when email is being scanned. Also check the Internet Mail, Last scanned: and scanned total: these should change and increase in number if your email is being scanned.

Yep, its in the Email header but not in the body of the email itself. Everything is checked. Also the email icon comes up and the avast world spins when receiving email. So as long as my email is being checked that is all that really matters. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Glad we could help, though it is a mystery why no clean notes, it works fine in OE6 SP2 for me.

As I said its value is very limited, and in no way effects the email scanning. You don’t need the clean note in your inbound email, if there is any infection detected the alert will wake the dead ;D

About the clean notes into the message body, can you try ‘Settings’ on my signature?
UseAlternateRtfSyncing value under [MailScanner] section:

Another mechanism for inserting notes into the body of emails in Microsoft Outlook. RtfSyncing is concerned with Rich Text Format. In emails, the user typically save both Rich text (HTML) and plain form of message. When you modify one type of message, RTFSync is the right function to synchronize text of message to the second form. Disable = 0.

See screenshot of settings here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=9514

Don’t forget that you will not see the inserted note in the ‘Sent Items’ folder of your mail program,
because avast adds the note after the mail leaves the mail program.

I am running IE7. Guess what, I am now using DSL instead of dial up and I am getting the msg in the emails body that it has been checked and I am not using 127.0.0.1 anywhere. Beats me but now seems to be working.
Thanks
Joe
