Cannot boot into safe mode

After installing a new video card last night (and updated drivers), my machine hangs on the Windows 7 start screen, as well as when trying safe mode. During safe mode, it freezes up at aswrvrt.sys, which led me here. I assume creating a boot disk on a USB drive is the thing to try, but wanted to post here first to see if there’s any other options to try as well.

CPU: i7 - 3.4 ghz
Mem: 12gb RAM
Video: EVGA gtx 760
OS: Win 7 Pro
Motherboard: MSI Z68A-GD65 (.80)

Thanks in advance!

From the safe mode menu select the low resolution option and see if that lets you in

Thanks for the quick reply, essexboy. I’ll give that a go tonight!

Well, I tried booting into safe mode w/ low res option, but it still locks up at the Windows start screen. Will look into creating a boot disk, but am open to trying other suggestions…

Is this a 32 or 64 bit system ?

Sorry - should have mentioned in my specs - 64 bit.

I’m starting to suspect its a HD issue, as sometimes it will fully boot into Windows, and other times not.

If it is being erratic like that then next time you are able to get in run Chkdsk, that would mark any bad sectors and allow you (hopefully) to back up your data

Quick update: I swapped out the drive and all is right again. Chances are I could have identified a bad sector or two to lock out, but chose to just replace the drive with a new one I had ordered prior to the problem surfacing.

Thanks again for your help, essexboy.

No problem, glad it is resolved
