Cannot change any actions in all Resident Shields/changes are not retained

Back in 2012 I wrote to Avast about the resident shields that once their actions were changed, they would not be retained, they would restore to the factory standard settings. I spoke to their representative, tried everything he said, gave all requested information, but it was fruitless.

I installed Avast in a test machine – a virtual machine. Brand new installation. I tried on Windows XP SP2, SP3, Windows 7 and 7 SP1. Nothing else installed, still, the same problem persisted. I asked Avast representative if their installation would work, their answer was positive, but I still do not buy it. It is impossible to believe that in a brand new installation, from scratch, this problem would still persist, and I would be the only one.

Again, the same problem, in a brand new installation (virtual machine), with version 8.0.1483.

My solution: back to version 4.8.

To the “experts”: do not even bother to “share” a “magical” solution if you did not even try to change your shields’ actions.

To Avast support team: go to VMWare, download the free VMWare Player, create a virtual machine, install whichever Windows you want, install Avast 8 or 7, then try to change any shield’s actions. When accessing the actions settings, do the changes remain as changed before, or do they revert to the standard settings?

Can Avast do something about such a simple problem? For how long should I keep on using version 4.8?

hey what do you try to chances in the shields that does not work in the latest version of avast?

you could try the new beta 1485 and see it there is some chances.

the beta build is 1485.

the build of latest retail release is 1483. so in 2 builds they would have corrected this problem? unlikely.

this problem persists since earliest of version 7. this problem was not corrected with a major version release, from 7 to 8. why would it be ever corrected in 2 builds after the latest retail release? unlikely.

the most important thing. did you try to change any of those actions?

Avast tech support, any answers?

Keyser, I use XP on Virtualbox and I test avast! beta there.
I could not reproduce your problem and can’t figure out what is going on, specially because it is an installation from scratch.

Tech, thanks for the answer. Finally a concrete answer!

I really believe the virtualization by Virtualbox should be similar to VMWare Player/Workstation, hence this problem would have happened there as well, if that was the case. This problem also happens on all 3 hosts I have, though.

I have tried many “superstitious” combinations to get the actions the way I want, such as turning off all resident shields, restarting, setting, turning on shields, setting then checking before turning on shields, and maybe other combinations, but as Murphy would have it, nothing worked.

I give up. I don’t know why this is happening, but it seems it is not happening with everybody, nor it bothers anyone. I will stick with version 4.8 then. Thanks again Tech.
