Cannot Change the Scan Result "Action" - Free version 7.0.1466

Windows XP-SP3, IE 8
Avast free program version 7.0.1466, definitions version 120920-0

After a full scan virus items were listed in the scan results.
Knowing what each item is I tried to change the “Action” from “Move to Chest” to “Do Nothing”.
However, the “Apply” bar in the scan results is not active and I am unable to make any changes from the default Action. The items were sent to the Chest.

I went to the Chest and restored them.

I then went to the Full scan Action settings and for Virus, PUP, and Suspicious I selected “No Action” for each of them.

After another full scan, the items again appeared in the scan results with the “Action” still labeled “Move to Chest” and the “Apply” bar is still inactive.

Well, it would be good to know the full path name and the virus detected.
Better, if you could upload a screenshot of the scan results.

If you are viewing these results from the Scan Computer, Scan Logs (selecting the log you wish to view) ?
Then there should be no action to be taken as this is a log, historic information on a completed scan.

If you are viewing this in the Results window of a scan which is still open (hasn’t been closed), then we need the information Tech asks for. As well as what has been asked for It may be that these are files that can’t be scanned (password protected, etc.) or detections in memory not physical files so can’t be moved.

Now I hope you can see why more detailed information is required to answer the question fully.

I appreciate the replies, however, as I originally noted, after a full scan the items were listed in the RESULTS window. I then changed the “Action” from “Move to Chest” to “Do Nothing” and the “Apply” bar in the RESULTS window is not active, so the Action change can not be made.

As requested, here are items that were in the RESULTS window that I did NOT want to be moved to the Chest:
WirelessNetView.exe - D:\Download\wirelessnetview - Low Severity PUP: Win32:PSWtool-AP [PUP] - Action: Move to Chest
wirelessnetview_setup.exe - D:\Download - Low Severity - PUP: Win32:PSWtool-AP [PUP] - Action: Move to Chest

Because the Apply bar is inactive, I was unable to change the Action and the items were moved to the chest.

FYI: I was wrong in initially noting that they are “virus” items, they are labeled PUP.

“more detailed information is required to answer the question fully”

Perhaps this issue will never get to a practical resolution seeing as how, after detailed information was asked for by two responders (Tech and DavidR) and within a couple of hours the requested information was posted, three days have passed and nothing else has transpired.

Let me re-phrase the issue:
In the Scan Results, why, when a change is made from “Move to Chest” to “Do Nothing”, does the “Apply” option remain disabled/inactive?

In the Scan Results, why, when a change is made from "Move to Chest" to "Do Nothing", does the "Apply" option remain disabled/inactive?
Results are things that have already happened. Since you can't change the past, there aren't any active buttons.

Unfortunately in many threads in many forums the content sent by a writer/poster gets interpreted differently by a reader. That appears to be the case here.

In my original posting I wrote about my selections in “Actions”, more specifically now: Scan Computer> Scan Now> Full scan> Settings> (Avast! Scan Settings) Actions. There is the option to: “Use the following controls to specify what actions to take when a virus, a potentially unwanted program or a suspicious file is detected.” I have a check mark by “Automatically apply actions during scan (check this box to select an action)”. Under each tab: “Virus”, “PUP”, and “Suspicious”, is found the instruction: “Select action to be performed when a suspicious object is found”. Under each tab I have selected “No Action”.

Having made the above noted “No Action” selections, upon completion of a scan, in the “Scan Results”, under the “Action” heading, I expected to see as a default “Do Nothing” as per my selection, not “Move to Chest”.

In any event, “Scan Results” offers the option to ‘Select the required action for each result and click “Apply”.’ Contrary to your assertion (bob3160) that “Results are things that have already happened.”, because I have already selected that “No Action” be taken, no Action has yet taken place, and will not take place until an Action is selected. You also wrote: “there aren’t any active buttons”. To the contrary, an “active” Apply button is available for each option, with the exception of “Do Nothing”.

In the Scan Results, with the default “Move to Chest” selected, when I hover over the “Apply” bar the color changes indicating that if/when I click on it each selected item will be moved to the Chest. It is the same for each other option with the exception of “Do Nothing”, the “Apply” bar does not change color so that Action cannot be applied.

Contrary to DavidR’s assertion that: “If you are viewing these results from the Scan Computer, Scan Logs (selecting the log you wish to view) ? Then there should be no action to be taken as this is a log, historic information on a completed scan.”; as a result of applying “Do Nothing”, I have the same options available in a Scan Logs that are presented in the original Scan Results. I can “Apply” “Move to Chest” and the other options, but I cannot “Apply” “Do Nothing”.

I know that a workaround is to place the items in question in the Scan Setting> Exclusions, so, absent any explanation thus far as to why “Do Nothing” cannot be applied, I will do so.

Contrary to your assertion (bob3160) that "Results are things that have already happened.", because I have already selected that "No Action" be taken, no Action has yet taken place, and will not take place until an Action is selected. You also wrote: "there aren't any active buttons". To the contrary, an "active" Apply button is available for each option, with the exception of "Do Nothing".
You seem to forget that we are not sitting in front of your computer and can only be guided by your description of the actions taken place. When you describe it as a log, then there aren't any buttons to select. Sometimes a picture is truly worth 1000 words. :)

As I previously wrote: “content sent by a writer/poster gets interpreted differently by a reader”.

The log has a list of previous scans. In regard to “there aren’t any buttons to select”, to the contrary, highlight any completed scan shown in the log and click on “View Results” on the bottom right and you will see the “Scan Results”.

Any log in black text with the notation “no virus found” will show the “Scan Results” but will not have any listings there. However, highlight any log entry with red text and a “virus found” notation, click on “View Results”, and you will see the “Scan Results” that offer all of the options that I previously noted.

So, the log does not only offer “historic information on a completed scan”, as DavidR wrote, it also allow the user to go one step further and “View Results”, “including infections detected”.

However, this thread is supposed to be about selecting “No Action” and then trying to “Apply” “Do Nothing”, it is not about the log.
