A recent update left me with Avast 8. The license reached the 30 days to expire window.
When I try to re-register, I see a “Retrieving Information” window for 20-30 seconds, then it closes and nothing happens. The same thing happens when I try to connect to my account in settings, and when I try to log in.
I have tried uninstalling, using the uninstall tool and reinstalling. Twice. Nothing seems to change this.
I am moving this back here, because I do not think they are related. I found a procedure for copying certificates that fixed the SSL problem. I do not have a resolution to the connection, sign in and register problems.
Is there a log somewhere of the AvastSVC attempts to connect that might give a clue?
I’m not even sure if it is the avastSvc.exe which does the registration process, if it is then it could be the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\Setup\setup.log file. But that can be quite large and not very user friendly.
Though if you initiate the registration again (make not of the time) and look in the setup.log for that time frame (the log in in oldest first, newest last), it should be close to the bottom of the file. You could copy and paste the last 100-200 lines.
I see nothing new added to the setup.log file when I try to register.
Using a protocol analyzer, I see a fair bit of traffic between my computer and various avast.com servers (both ways) when trying to do a registration. So there appear to be no communications problems between the Avast services or programs and the internet.
