Hi, recently I always encounter a pop up red box saying error cannot update from avast. When I try to do update manual, I will get message like this:

Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download77.avast.com (unknown:80).
Total time: 26:15
I tried to uninstall & reinstall the software but still can’t get updates. I have no problem accessing to internet. Any idea what is the problem? Hope someone can help me… Thanks!
Is this happening directly after you boot ?
What is your internet connection method, dial-up or broadband ?
What is your firewall as this sounds more like your firewall blocking avast.setup ?
If that is the case, re-installation won’t have any effect as it will still get blocked.
I am using cable, subscribed from starhub. I am using zonealarm. But it was installed at the same time with Avast anti virus, and it was working fine, only recently then I encounter this problem. How can I check whether is it the firewall problem?
It may useful to go to the program permissions in ZoneAlarm, delete all of them for avast processes and have ZoneAlarm ask you for them again.
There have been cases where ZA has become “confused” and deleting and re-creating the ZA permissions has overcome ZA preventing avast from performing its updates.

I had the same trouble and the only fix I could find was to turn off the firewall as briefly as possible (took 3 minutes) and do the upload of the new definitions then turn the firewall back on.
