  1. Which firewall do you use?
  2. Try “no proxy” into Updates > Proxy settings.
  3. Boot… sometimes a temporary glitch.

I just wanted to add that I have had the same problem for weeks, and the problem was fixed after I added avast as an exception in the windows firewall. I have used Avast for about 2 years on this laptop running XP without having problems updating before this.
