Cannot connect to localhost

Hello, I’m brand new on here
First let me outline my set-up. I am running Win98SE OS, Firefox browser, v. 1.0.2, Thunderbird email client, 0.8, Mailwasher, Avast 4.6.35 and Sygate personal firewall.
The problem which has developed since I installed both Avast and Sygate a few days ago is that when I click on the Thunderbird ‘Get Mail’ button, only email from my Spamcon account is downloaded and I get an error message: Could not connect to server; the connection was refused.
Any email addressed to my ntl account is not downloaded. It looks like a configuration problem to me, but I don’t know how to go about rectifying it.
Any advice appreciated. I shall be away shortly until this evening, so please excuse any lack of response until then.
Thanks in advance.

first update your windows and then take ur firewall off and try that

Into the firewall settings, ashMaiSv.exe should be allowed to connect. Besides this, as you’re using Windows 98\Me, the change of the login settings is normal while using avast. See http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=display;board=2;threadid=7913;start=0#msg64228

Thanks for the replies, Ricky and Technical. I have tried accessing email with Sygate disabled, but it made no difference. Technical, can go into more depth regarding the Ashmaisv.exe action. Can’t find a ‘settings’ tab on Sygate.

Can you rephrase? I do not understand you…

I’ve used Sygate and I was talking about the applications allowed to connect. It won’t be a ‘tab’ but into the Sygate settings must have a place (I’m sure) that there is a list of the allowed applications to connect… Is Ashmaisv.exe there?

Hello, Technical. Thanks. Just arrived home. There is a list but only AdAware and Avast are shown under ‘A’.
How can I enter ashmaisv.exe in there? Can’t see any facility for it.

You should be allowed to add manually an executable. The path is the avast! installation root.
If you can, and you checked to scan POP3 and SMTP and have run Mail Protection Wizard to start the scanning engine you should be asked by the firewall to allow ashmaisv.exe as soon as you open your email client and try to receive and/or send email. If not, it is your firewall the trouble and not avast :stuck_out_tongue:
