Hi!
I would just like to know why I keep getting the message ‘cannot connect to server’, when trying to ‘update’ my free version of the

Hi!

Most commonly it is related to firewall blocking.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
Try this also if the above doesn’t make a difference - From the avastUI, Settings, Updates, Proxy Settings, set it to Direct connection (no proxy), see image.
Has this been resolved? I am having a similar problem. Running AVAST 5.0 on my wife’s win xp machine. Avast 5.0 has been running just fine w/ automatic updates then my wife let me know that she saw that updates were not working. Checked myself and last successful update was in November. I received these messages when trying to manually update both the program and the definitions:
“cannot connect to a710.sl.avast.com”
and also
“cannot connect to download678.avast.com (74.52.201.98:80”
BigJH37, can you answer the same questions David posted before?
Have you followed the suggestions in my reply to the original post ?
no problems with firewall. switched proxy settings to direct connect and now both engine/deff and program updates state “Already up to date.” How can that be?
I am wondering if AVAST has been hijacked? Where do I check settings to ensure the web address for updates is correct? What should the address be when i get to this setting?

Downloads from the avast update servers are controlled by the servers.def file that controls the avast servers it can connect to (currently 284), in my listing, to balance server load. This may differ from yours as I’m testing the beta version at present.
That is a protected file so can’t be changed. The whole process is under the control of the avast.setup file, also protected and all downloads are also verified when downloaded, so you can be reasonably confident it hasn’t been hijacked.
