Originally after installing AVAST the PC always dialled out when ME got to the desktop. The Blue a Ball rotated then the dial out occurred. In desperation and through a series of poke and hope setting changes I stopped the dial out. Now, during internet use, an AVAST Red Box pops up informing me that it cannot download avast.com.
What have I done!! Help appreciated . geryhatric.

avast doesn’t dial out, something else is attempting to dial out and in order to do that a file is run. It is the running of that file that causes avast to scan the file for viruses. So your poke and hope stopped the program from dialling out so avast didn’t have a file to scan so no rotation of the icon.

ensure that your firewall allows internet access to avast.setup otherwise avast can’t connect to download updates.
Thank you DR.
I only have Avast installed. No Firewall.
The red notice says “An error has occurred while attempting to update” More information says "Cannot connect to
update … avast.com "
Any idea how to fix it?
Regards
This is commonly a firewall issue and I’m sorry I have no idea as to why you can’t connect. I assume that you can browse, send and receive email, etc.
It is definitely a mistake not to have a firewall installed as you effectively no longer control your system, Zone Alarm free is fine for those not familiar with the workings of a firewall with a relatively friendly user interface.
It may be possible that something could be blocking the avast.com site but this is less likely as you probably couldn’t get to these forums, a sub domain of avast.com
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it.
