Cannot download email with scanning on in Mail Shield

I have today upgraded to Avast 5 on my Windows 7, 32bit computer also on my windows 7, 64bit laptop. I use Mailwasher to check mail prior to full download and Thunderbird 3 as my email client. My ISP is Freedom2Surf

When I try a manual or atomatic mailcheck in Mailwasher I get an error message on all acounts “connection was intentionally closed by server before session was completed”

When I try to download emails in Thunderbird, it appears to check all accounts but no emails are downloaded.

I can send emails OK but I can only receive emails if inbound scan in “Mail Shield” is unchecked.

Any ideas please?, I have also raised a ticket on this one

Thank you

Personally as a mailwasher pro user I have avast IgnoreProcess for mailwasher.exe. Since MailWasher doesn’t download the complete email to do its analysis, it only downloads the headers, a small part of the body, it doesn’t download images or attachments and it views what is downloaded in text only. Based on this I personally don’t feel that any negligible risk worth scanning duplication, but the choice is yours.

By editing the EmailShield.ini file, [MailScanner] section using notepad. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\EmailShield.ini

[MailScanner]
IgnoreProcess=MailWasher.exe add this line if you don’t already have an IgnoreProcess line.

Save the changes to EmailShield.ini and exit, the avast self-defence module will ask are you sure about the changes, etc. answer Yes.

The above file location is for XP so you might need to find it on Vista, etc.

What port are you using to download mail? Does your ISP use SSL? Is it a POP account or IMAP? Do you enter username or username@server in Mailwasher? Any advanced options selected?

MailWasher imports the email client account settings and the account settings can be modified in the same way as the email client.

However, I feel there is little value in doing this given the very limited risk involved in the way mailwasher deals with the small part of the email it handles. That is why I exclude mailwasher from the mail shield.

Thanks DavidR, I always wanted to exclude Mailwasher from the scan but didn’t know how, I tend to review and delete most emails from there anyway and hopefully that will solve the problem so far as Mailwasher is concerned, I’ll let you know.

sded, I am using Port 110 on all my ‘f2s’ accounts none of them are SSL, most are pop3 but I use one IMAP account for syncing calendars, which is unimportant and I also download gmail which is an SSL account. I have tried tweaking the SSL settings but no success so far.

At the moment I have Avast set to not scan incoming, which sort of defeats the object.

Many thanks
Roger

On your Gmail account, in your mailprogram try removing SSL and use port 110/587

No problem, glad I could help.

You only had to ask how to do it or if it was possible ;D

Welcome to the forums.

For gmail, the attached settings work for me with TB3 and with Mailwasher Pro. For your f2s accounts, I seem to recall some postings in the past where it made a difference whether you used username vs username@ISP for your username.
Since a major portion of the avast! problems seem related to previous security software and how it was uninstalled, what were you using before for an AV and how did you uninstall it?

And under Mail Shield/expert settings/SSL accounts what do you have?

OK guys, I think I may have sorted this. I made the alterations suggested by DavidR - it’s a little more tricky in Windows 7 because you need to open Notepad with administarter rights and then open EmaiSheild.ini once you find out where it is, however got over that one but it did not seem to make a huge difference.

So next I set all the none SSL accounts in the “SSL Account” expert setting section, with port 110, even though it said this was unneccssary and voila! it seems to be working for Mailwasher and Thunderbird so fingers crossed thsat seems to be working. I am now scanning and downloading.

Many thanks for your help DavidR and sded
